Posts: 55 Location: South Central Minnesota | Im looking to get my gal a new reel and was wondering what your women prefer. She has never fished muskys yet so I want to start her with something nice sized and easy to operate. Ive been looking at either a Revo Toro 50 or a Curado 300ej. Just looking for alittle advise from the guys or gals on this one.

a curado 300/301 is a very good reel for smaller lures i throw 8 inch hellhounds and phantoms with it just fine it has lasted me beating on it for 1000 hours threw hot and freezing temps. its smaller i love it. i put some mono on the reel them fill it with braid so i dont can get two fills out of my 80 pound braid... plus if you have a bad tangle... you arent wasting all your line or wondering did i cut the good braid below it your lucky to have a woman to take fishing can i recommend a 8 inch phantom in orange or walleye in 8 size with the tails...she might outfish you hehe

Posts: 8828 | Samantha loves her Revo's.... She had never really even fished before we got them for her, much less fishing for muskies. We spent an afternoon out in the yard casting, and one day on the water before I took her to Eagle for 6 days. The first half of day one was a good guy. 10 foot casts, backlashes, forgetting to push the thumb bar.... When we finally got her to relax and stop swearing, and stop trying so hard, all of a sudden the casts were going 20 feet, and then 30, and within about an hour she was picking apart structure like she had been doing it her whole life. There were a few more meltdowns over missed hooksets and botched figure 8's, but after two seasons she's got several fish under her belt, the biggest of which are 44 and 45. 4th place in the women's division for our club this year...

Posts: 663 | I have usually found that with new anglers or those with small hands to encourage them to hold the rod at the foregrip instead of palming it eliminates the whole issue of what reel and also helps them with better hooksets.

Posts: 257 Location: Valpo IN | My wife muskie fish`s with me 70% of the time and she has 2 revo toro 50`s, they work flawless for her mainly throwing 8`s & top water`s. Cant go wrong with em look around and you`ll find a good deal on em. Find em used and send them in to pikemaster they`ll be as good as a new one. good luck and enjoy the time together, time flies by so fast !!!

Posts: 8828 | RMK, she's got the 50 series Winch for double 10's (because she insists on throwing the same lures as the guys) and the 5.4:1 50 series Toro for everything else. I've tried them both (I have the 60's) myself, and I have to admit, they are pretty nice! As to Pete's comment - she does hold the foregrip, which has helped a lot too. And watch out when she sets the hook, man - she can rock the boat! One thing that she did that I wish I had done is she started out casting with her left arm, over her left shoulder, so there is no need to switch hands. Pretty amazing in two seasons of fishing how well she can cast, too. The nice thing is I fish lefty much of the time, so if I'm up front and she's on my left we don't often get in each other's way. I told her up front that I didn't expect her to enjoy muskie fishing, and if she hated it I would never make her go again. Never imagined I'd wind up with a new fishing partner. I just wish she'd stop with the "hahah, mine was bigger!!" stuff. That gets old! ![]()

Posts: 8828 | 24/7 - I had her try my 300 Cardiff. It was better than most of my "normal sized" reels, but the low profile 50 series Revo's fit her hand better and were much more comfortable. I have to say, after throwing a few casts here and there with Samantha's Revo's (while enduring that "hey, that's MY rod!" glare) I almost wish I had gotten them for myself too.

Posts: 349 | A curado or revo 50 are both great options in the low profile reels. Don't be afraid to check out smaller round reels though. An okuma or st. Croix/daiwa in the 250 size are small and light reels. I picked up an okuma red isis 250 p for $45 last winter and threw big blades and any other bait i own all season with it and used it for lakers and pike through the ice. I also had a revo 50 and personally i liked the small round reel much better for both comfort and power. If you have the chance let her try both and see which one she prefers.
