I know this is after the fact, but at the Wausau expo, I purchased a St Croix Sling Blade rod and paired it with a Calcutta TE 400 Lucanus Reel. Was this a wise match or did I make a mistake with this setup???a

I have thrown topwaters with the Sling Blade as well so you have some options, but definitely a great big blade setup.

You can throw pretty much anything with that set up. Pounders wouldn't be ideal but definitely possible.
