Has anybody used the River2Sea Clackin' Crayfish for musky? A lake I fish has a lot of rocky shorelines and is loaded with crayfish. Would the musky eat a crayfish-imitating lure? I think they would but I am not sure. Also, Rollie and Helen's do carry the Clackin' Crayfish so I assume it would catch a muskies. Thanks for any help.

Posts: 1086 | If it's in the water...and it moves: it's food. Therefore, yes...if a musky is in the area and is feeding, being the opportunistic feeders that they are: they'll it eat it. Are crayfish/crawdad's the musky's mainstay diet? No. But that doesn't mean anything. Be in the right place, at the right time, active muskie in the area....then...with your crayfish as the bait of choice at that moment...and a musky could eat it.

I fish a rocky river loaded w/ crayfish... and can vouch that muskies do in fact eat crayfish and crayfish imitating baits. It happens quite frequently on our river.

Posts: 130 Location: Madison, WI | I have 1 that I would trade for another muskie bait. I am looking for a Musky Killer and a Magnum Musky Killer - preferably with silver blade. Let me know if interested. [email protected] Madison, WI area.

Posts: 572 | if you do some searches, you will find references to muskies searching for crayfish. I found an article "Rattlin' up Spring Muskies" that references "Cast a crayfish pattern Rattletrap on to these rocky areas". So, I would think the crayfish lure might work well in the spring time. I may have to try one. note- the latest style has a weed guard. article..... http://www.bigfishtackle.com/fishing_articles/Freshwater_Fishing_Ar... Posts: 203 Location: Germantown, WI | I don't have any scientific data to prove that crayfish make up a significant portion of a muskies diet, but my personal experience leads me to believe that muskies do eat crayfish. In certain waters and at certain times of year and that this may be more than incidental. My family has been fishing a lake in Southern Ontario for nearly 30 years. Our trips are typically 1 week long and have occurred at various time depending on our schedules from Mid-June to late September. We typically spend about half our time fishing Bass and the other half fishing Muskies. We have landed quite a few muskies on tube jigs, jig and pork chunks or jig with plastic craw trailers while targeting smallmouth. These were muskies that were up shallow in rocks taking lures that were intended to imitate crayfish. We've caught muskies up 46" on crayfish imitating jigs as well as numerous muskies on bass sized topwater baits in the same areas. My guess is that the muskies may have been up there chasing Perch, Rock Bass and Smallmouths or Largemouths. I have no doubt that muskies are more than willing to eat a crayfish that happens to be in right place at the right time. Having said that, I don't ever intentionally target muskies with crayfish imitating lures. The lures I use to target bass are made for bass in terms of hook size , strenght and general construction. The lures I use to target muskies are generally bigger, have larger hooks and are made to handle the strength and abuse dished out by Muskies. So to answer your question, I would say buy the Dahlberg Crayfish for Bass. If you catch a Musky with it, count it as a bonus. Just don't be surprised if you occasional catch a musky while fishing for Bass.

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | I have been Musky fishing for about 3 years now and my wife is just starting to get into it. Last fall we were fishing a lake that has a ridiculous amount of crayfish in it. I was trolling a MI shallow invader and my wife was trolling for northern using a red/orange/black crayfish color rattle trap. I didn't catch anything that day. But a 45" smoked her bait while going maybe 2 - 3mph. Was it because of the rattle? was it because of the color? was it because it looked like a crayfish? I don't know, but I do know that crayfish are a very abundant forage in that lake and the Musky did not think twice. Needless to say that is the moment my wife looked at me and said "I know understand why you spend so much D*** money on these things" "when do I get my pole"? the next day was the answer to that. So in my experience, like the other guy said if it moves, its food and they will eat it.
