Subject: Which Tuffy model is right for me?

Getting familiar with Tuffy boats but a little confused by various models and specific applications. Below is how I fish - which model(s) would be best for my use?

-60% smallmouth on upper Mississippi or on Mille Lacs (so needs to hold position in current, and handle occasional big water)
-20% casting/trolling muskies (needs to troll down well, able to do figure 8's reasonably well)
-20% jigging walleyes
-Prefer something with front and rear casting decks (could be either tiller or side console, but no full windshields)

I'm contemplating buying 1 of 2 different ways: 1) either buy something used for cash around $10k, or 2) Finance something new (might be hard with kids entering college years, but maybe...?).

Any of the V Hull Esox Deep V G Series Models would fit your needs.Your description fits the 1700 Esox Deep V well. The 1760 would be a larger boat, same layout and handling but a bit better in the big stuff. The X190 would be a perfect fit.

The 1700 Esox Deep V used is teens to twenty K with a motor that will troll down, I'd suggest a Pro Kicker. X190 is tough to find used, new would be thirties somewhere and you will need a kicker.

The new 2012 1760 T would be a great choice if you want a tiller, watch for it available in an new model tricked out with sonars, trolling motor, Polyflake, flush cleats, custom trailer with fiberglass fenders and aluminum mags, led lights, ratchet tie downs, brakes, and more, and the hull optioned to the max with a 75 4 stroke for under 30K pretty nicely decked out. That rig will be introduced at the NW Show in Minneapolis, see Joe Carlson at Grandpa Joe's Marine at the show.

I would recomend a 1890 Osprey GT.
I have one for sale on the boat adds on this page. I will be ordering a new one same exact boat when mine sells. Best lay out of any Musky boat I've ever seen.
It would be big enough to handle Mille Lacs and Mississippi river.
With the 90hp it will troll down to 1mph easy for walleye or 3-4mph for musky
The front deck is giant 8'x8' Tiller model has a ton of room for gear and moving around in boat. Stores rods up to 9'. Tons of dry storage.
Even if you are not interested in mine. I would recomend that model.
Im asking $20,500 for mine (2007) its $35,000+ new-----SOLD-------
Thanks,

Are you referring to the new Ranger tiller or is there a new Tuffy 1760 tiller?

Good stuff guys, thx for the input. The 1890 GT and x-190 look awesome but I think I'll be challenged for garage space at that length. I probably need something 17 feet. The new 1760 tiller sounds really nice if I go the new boat route (does it have a rear casting deck with seat post)?

If I go used, the Tuffy's I see in the classifieds are usually Esox Magnums. Would they work reasonably well for primariloy smallmouth fishing? I think glass would track better than the aluminum boats I've looked at, but I'm wondering if the lower profile would handle occasional bigger waves and if the shallower keel would hold position in a river current with an iPilot?

The Magnum will handle the challenge well until you take it on big water. Anything over REAL 2.5' waves get uncomfortable if running a tiller.

Another great option is this rig:

Handles big water really well, draws less than a foot at launch, and runs mid 30's with a 50 hp 4 stroke. Absolutely perfect for what you described if you are looking for a smaller 17' boat.

Does the x-170 have a rear casting deck and seat post - hard to tell from the picture. Would be great to find a used one around $10k but they're probably too new. Still, may go the financing route too - good to know, thx.

Sorry, can't let that cat out of the bag yet. Couple more weeks... and it's only the 1760 T.

I took a closer look at the web site and am a little confused on the layout of the x-170. The photos and the floor plan diagram aren't quite the same. I like the diagram layout of the floor plan better and am wondering if that's whats actually in production? The diagram shows a center rod locker storage and more interior room along the middle/sides of the boat. It also shows a rear deck and a couple different seat positions I'm assuming to sit up high and cast better from. sworral can you shed some light on this? Thank you!

The graphic is not correct. I'll send a request to get that changed asap. There will be a rear deck offered. Rod locker is side tank.
