| Can anyone enlighten me with the big differences between split grip and non split grip rods? Pros and cons for both would be much appreciated.

| i believe split grips are lighter (by how much may vary among rod companies), kind of "forces" you to place your hand on it when casting which marks the best hand positioning for casting (thats what st croix says) those are some of the more technical pros but I just like the way they feel more buts thats personal preference.

Location: Detroit River | I have booth split grip & full grip. I prefer the full grip because it's more comfortable when I tuck in under my arm. When I tuck the split grip under my arm my ribs get a little sore. |

Location: South-Central PA | Here's my 2 cents: It depends on how you hold your rod. If you hold your rod by the fore grip the majority of the time, you'd be better off with a full grip. Holding the rod by the fore grip places the space in the split grip right on your ribs which is not comfortable for a long day of fishing. If you are like me and don't use the fore grip much if ever, you'll be fine with a split grip.
I build my grip lengths so that the fighting butt tucks under my arm when I am fighting a fish and holding the rod by the rear grip behind the seat. Again, if you are a fore gripper and tuck the rod, the bare blank between the split grips will be contacting your arm pit which isn't the greatest feeling!
It's really a matter of your fishing style.

Location: Chesterton, Indiana | It is all personal preference. Depends how you like to hold the rod, place it under your arm, and cast. Pick one up and try it. I am a fan of the split grip but to each his own on rod grip preference. It is like picking a reel or power handle everyone is different in how they feel comfortable. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Before I tried split grip I was worried that it might not be as comfortable as a full grip. Looking back I wish I hadn't waited so long. The split grip is actually more comfortable because there is less mass between your arm and ribs. Less mass means less likely to bruise bacause your arm has less to press against your body. |

| I prefer full grips because that is all I have and my wife knows that is all I have. A split grip would be a dead giveaway. |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | Just a personal preference I would say. I am old school, I like equipment that fills a need. For me I can fish with full handle rods or split grips. But if you lay both down and give me the choice I'll grab the split grip every time. Don't care about looks, style, or any of that. Handle lenght & comfort of use is what it's all about for me. |

Location: midwest | I palm reels and prefer a full grip. The little extra material seems to balance the rods a little better. If for some odd reason my rod ends up in the drink( it happened to me once!) most of my rods will float for a short duration with the full grip. |

Location: Not where I want to be! | Not sure about other rod companies, but in the St. Croix line-up the split grip rods have the reel seat about 1 1/2" further up the rod blank than the full grip rods. This changes the pivot point and will affect the action/performance of the rod. So, say a split grip slingblade will be a bit stiffer then a full grip slingblade. Just something to keep in mind. |
