If you use 130# or stronger you won't have any problems with it

You'll get opinions on both sides of this argument. I know many anglers who have used flourocarbon leaders for years catching hundreds of muskies and never have had a problem. I know anglers who have had flouro get bit through.

I have caught many muskies of flouro leaders but now 50/50 on it. I had a fish hit my flouro trolling leader and slice down & across, looked like the fish hit the leader. The fish didn't get hooks and bait floated up; I assumed a fluke. Last fall I witnessed a friend loose an absolute giant after it bit through a 130lb flouro leader; major bummer. Next year I will use the new 49 strand wire leader by Stealth Tackle (crimped & knotted); time will tell if I see a difference in fish reaction to flouro vs. wire.

You will also hear of problems with wire leaders: some guy had bad crimp, a bent wire broke, etc. Ultimately no leader type is 100% failure proof, 100% of the time.... somebody had xyz happen.

Ultimately it's a personal choice for you. If you do go with flouro I would lean towards a minimun 130lb test rating.

A few years ago I had Jim from Glittertails experiment with leaders before I would use any from him. That experience revolutionized my leader purchases and leader thinking. For Jerkbaits of any kind I will use Jim's single wire steel. For trolling I often use nylon coated 7 strand wire with timbles made by Jim. For bucktails and topwater I usually use a nylon coated 7 strand leader. I also use flourocarbon for slow rolling bucktails only. I use Jim's flouro with a nail knot, but have heard good things about Stealth and Brad Nelson's leaders. I am kind of stuck on the nail knot vs a loop crimp as a result of Jim's test.

I am absolutely amazed by the number of heartbreak stories I have heard through the years with leader failure. Especially some large ones that have been bit through on flourocarbons and jerk baits. I have also seen people spend mega bucks on rods, reels and then use crappy bent up leaders. (strange) I get a little kink in any leader and it is soon to be tossed.

I would not use floro for rubber or jerkbaits. Fish tend to hit it the head and end up with leader in mouth. Any thing you can cut with a knife, muskys can cut with teeth. I have seen fish cut off #130 floro like nothing, have had friends loose huge fish being bit off with floro on bulldawgs. If you have not had a fish bite you off using floro for jerks you are lucky at some point you will. I use straight wire leaders from Stealth for this. used some of Stealths new multi strand wire leaders last fall for cranks and loved them also.
Good Luck

I make my own floro leaders from 100 LB vanish. I have never lost a fish to date and have had some very large fish caught on them. To me it is the way to go since I believe you catch more fish on floro then any other leader.

I agree with Jeff Hanson on not using flourocarbon for rubber or jerkbaits. I have heard some real heartbreak stories from fish who have hit the head of the bait and bit through the flourocarbon.

I have never seen a difference in the numbers of fish boated between flouro and non flouro leaders. Flourocarbon is nice because it has less restriction on lure action and is longer lasting in general compared to 7 strand or solid wire. In terms of catching more or less fish.......muskies are a stupid fish with a tiny brain. We all make em way too smart cause they are hard to catch.

I have been using Stealth since John first started making them. I had a fish peel back 135# while in the net about 3 years ago. Since then I switched to 180# and have not had a single bite off.
Still use wire for jerkbaits and topwaters.
If you notice wear on flouro change it out for a new one.

I used some Stealth Tackle leaders for 3 years (WAY too long!!!) and boated many fish on each one and never had a problem with them. Two handle felt like they had been used. My preference are the 130# Stealth Fluro leaders.

Definitely single strand wire leader on my jerkbaits but I tie 200lb fluoro leaders that I use for rubber and bucktails with no problems or bite offs.

When I first started using Flouro I started off with Stealth Tackle's 130 lb Seagar, never had any issues at all, with a TON of test samples...over 1,000 muskies and not one single bite off or failure. Since the technology of flouro has gotten better over the past few years, the diameter of 150 and even 180 lb Stealth Tackle fluro leaders are just a slight difference than the old 130 lb so I have switched to using 150 and 180 lb leaders from Stealth. I am not sitting at close to 2,000 muskies on flouro leaders and not a single bite off or a problem breaking. I use these leaders on topwaters, bucktails, rubber, gliders, twitch baits....you name it, with only the exception of a few lighter baits like a Jackpot. I have complete faith and confidence in what Stealth Tackle produces. They use the highest quality components and every leaders is made one at a time by John Bette. If you use the proper pound test, you won't have any problems.

BNelsons been makin my leaders for 7 or 8 years. He makes 180lb and was makin em years before you could get 180 lb leaders in the stores. High quality. No failures. Good prices. Nuff said.

For comparison I used 12 lb flouro for my little joe's in Canada. Lots of pike and didn't have a bite off til the last day. I had been using the same one the whole time. Pike don't have the teeth of muskies but this was only 12 lb. line.
