Hey guys. There are not to many Illinois muskie lakes but i know one that has got some in it. By reading reviews, I know there are a lot of small muskie(30inches) I checked it out over the summer and a good portion of the lake have surface vegitation on it. What would be a good lure for getting through the grass. Do you use oversize topwater frogs like the SPRO king daddy or dahlberg diver frog? Thanks.

There are actually well over 30 Illinois lakes that have muskies stocked, many more if you included privates lakes and clubs. If in your question you are asking about Spring Lake North (weedy and lots of dinks) you will find fishing in the springtime (now til mid April) to be the best time to catch muskies with normal presentations. If you are looking to fish it when the weeds come up, normal bass techniques for matted weeds catch lots of muskies. These would include frogs like you said, pitching big plastics, and buzzbaits.

The lake where we have our cottage is shallow and lots of weeds in the summer. One presentation I have had some good luck with is musky size buzz baits. Get them moving as soon as they touch and they do a good job of going right over heavy weeds. The only disadvantage is that it is a single hook type lure and you will have some hit and not get hooked, you will have some that get off after the initial hookup. Just make sure the hook is very sharp when you start and touch it up from time to time.

I was planning on fishing in early fall and not summer. When all that green muck accumulates on the surface is when I was going to fish.

The big Johnson Silver (about 1.5 oz) spoon with a large plastic trailer on it will work. This bait will cost you about $5 and of all the stupid lures I have purchased the Johnson Silver spoon has caught me my largest musky. You can also find larger weedless spoons online from good musky shops. Good luck!

Don't forget about unweighted suicks and spinnerbaits. They can do anything you need to do in the weeds for muskies.
