I have a few pounder dawgs but haven't thrown them much. My general thought is the difference between a mag dawg and a pounder isn't much to a fish. I'm curious if guys have had better results with pounders, and if they are worth the extra $$ of getting a differant rod?

Do you think it was the 2nd bait through and not the fact that it was a 2 pounder? Not being a smart nice try but thinking about the article Spensor Bearman just did in Musky Hunter

Could it have been a color difference also?

There are some days where upsizing is what trips their trigger and other days where it isn't as important. Maybe on that day it was the 2nd guy through that was the ticket, maybe not? The only way to know is if the guy in example moved up front and had the same results. That point seems rather moot to me for this thread. Answer this: If you were in the boat and the guy in the back was seeing all the fish on the 2 pounder, how long would it be before you at least started considering tying on your own monster bait? I know it wouldn't take me very long...

The 2 Pounder is probably a rather extreme example, 35oz of fun! The switch from Mag to Pounder isn't nearly that large. I'm sure most everybody would rather toss the mag, but I'm also fairly certain that the extra few ounces of weight would be quickly offset by that whole "seeing fish" thing.

I had the opposite response last fall on vermilion. Pounder activity in the front with minimal activity on the bigger rubber in back. Size matters but there are too many variables to consider.

I am barely tough enough to throw a pounder:)
If you can chuck a 2 pounder all day, then u deserve a big fish. My buddy has a 2 pounder and I threw it for 5 minutes - that thing is ridiculous, though I am sure it works.

It could have been more of a depth thing being the 2 pounder was most likely running deeper; but I do think size can be a factor. I took an older fella out a few falls ago and short story is I had boated two fish and seen 4 others while he had nothing going. I had given him a mag dawg to use and explained what I was doing but I noticed he was still not counting it down enough and working it different/faster. He felt it was color so I gave him my 'hot' bait and clipped on the one I gave him earlier. One nice pike and another muskie later he was just dumb founded. Action was throughout the day and made for a great day on the water but he ended up with zero anything. There's just so many dimensions to this sport and with little contact with fish makes it tougher to be concrete as to what is going on. Btw, I made up for all his netting work by taking him trolling a few days later and let him get all the rips for the day.

I use pounders a lot starting in the summer, they catch fish. They key is to listen to the fish, if you are fishing with someone that is throwing a mag dawg and they seem to be getting follows but can't get the fish to commit switch to a pounder and sometimes that will make all the difference. But, there are also times that downsizing will be the way to go. You just have to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone sometimes.

All in all not throwing a pounder will cost you some fish over the course of a full season.
