Posts: 18 | I currently use eye screws on my lures, but I was debating on going to through wire construction. What does everyone recommend? I'm no where near as good as most of the people on this site!! I've just started making my own lures and could use all the advice I can get!!

Posts: 360 | Screw eyes work plenty fine. Through wire is just the next step as your skills progress. Ive done plenty of through wires but still use screw eyes as well

Posts: 501 Location: S.Wisconsin | I stick with 1 7/16" .091 screw eyes. Pre drill and epoxy them in. After a few coats of e-tex they are stuck and not going anywhere.

Posts: 1202 Location: Money, PA | I had a buddy of mine take a resin blank of mine with magnum screw eyes in to his work to do some testing. They put a steel rod in a vise and made a 90lb cable with crimped loops on either end...hooked one side to the belly screw and the other to the rod in the vise....They pulled and pulled until finally the cable broke! Tried it again using a 200lb rated cable.....This time the eye screw opened up after a lot of pulling by a 250lb guy....I was quite surprised the screw did not come out of the resin and quite happy with the results...we actually got it on video...IMHO thru wire is overkill and way too much unecessary work. Any lure is only as strong as its weakest link....Your set up goes the same....either way, hooks would straighten out, line would break or leaders give before the eyes or thru wire on a lure break. Are you epoxying the screw eyes in the resin? If so, what kind of epoxy are you using? Thanks for your time.

The .092 magnum screw eyes are very strong and like someone said, after a few coats of e-tex, they aren't going anywhere. I've only done through-wire when required such as topwater tail-rotating baits and globes where it has to spin on the shaft. You might be surprised at the number of lures you buy off the shelf that use screw eyes. Nothing wrong with them. Edited by MartinTD 3/23/2012 9:07 AM

Posts: 962 | I would rather have screw eyes. I can tune the baits easier and get them to walk more. All of Muskietrains crankbaits have screw eyes and the Leo crankbaits I have do also. Both are made from cedar. I have never had one fail yet. Good luck, Jeff Hanson madisonmuskyguide.com
