I was going through my pics the other day and noticed something different about this muskie. My buddy caught this fish (a shade over 50") in August 2010 in the Great Lakes system. The underside of the jaw in the vertical/boga pic shows 6 pores on the visible side. When I zoom in tight on the bottom pic, I can only see scales on the top 1/3 or so of the cheek/operculum. Could this be a tiger or possibly the offspring of a rare fertile tiger? I can email the pics to anyone that could give me a definitive answer.
Thanks
*We know the vertical hold is bad so please let it go. The boga was used to control the fish in the net while removing the hooks and safely getting her out of the bag.

I doubt it. Looks like a true musky to me. Pointed fins, dark markings on light background. Can't see the scales on the cheeks from the picture, not enough resolution. I'll bet $.05 it's a true.

Yes a true muskie. The pointed fins are a dead give away that it is.

It's a pure strain of regular barred musky with brilliant markings. Nice fish.

That is a color variation of a great lakes spottie.

This is what the rest of the muskies out of that weed bed looked like. This one was caught a few hundred yards away from the above fish several days later......

Yep, looks like a pure strain to me. My PB is a GLS spot, but looks very similar to the fish above. I've even caught GLS fish that are spotted on the front half and more barred and variagated on the back half.

Great Lakes spot. Very similar in coloration to many of the reintroduced Green Bay fish in certain areas.

Here's one I found a few years back. The scary part is this study was performed by the Pa Fish & Boat Commission and is on their website. This is probably why our management can't compare to WI, MN...anywhere.

They did a lake study in 2001 to determine the fish populations on Tuscarora Lake in SE Pa. They netted 6 "tigers" up to 49 inches. "Pure muskellunge, which have also been stocked in the lake, were not collected during the survey and as a result will no longer be stocked." A picture is included of the 49-inch "tiger" but it's tail is as pointy as can be.

2roofmusky: Tigerish pattern, but I believe definately a pure musky.

Guest: PA might have gotten six tigers from that lake, but the one in the photo certainly is NOT!

My point exactly. That's definitely a pure. I was saying that even the Fish and Boat Commission was unable to distinguish between the two.

To be fair, I'm sure whomever made the call that the fish was a "tiger" doesn't fish for muskies. On the other hand, I would expect a biologist to differentiate between the two species, especially when seeing and holding the fish in person.

I live about ten miles from that lake and I have spotted a few decent fish. Thats the lake I will be doing most of my fishing. Hopefully I can get a few to bite this year.

Pa has made this mistake several times at this lake .They got their data screwed up and dont have a record of pures being stocked . And refuse to admitt the error the good news is they are now allowing us to stock owr own pures in this lake and tankers will be showing up in about 3 years

Glad to hear you're going to be stocking pures there. Beautiful lake, but I've found it extremely tough to fish with all of those steep drops and not a ton of weeds. I've made a few trips over the years, but I've never even seen a fish. Maybe I'll give it another try in a few years.

I've only fished there once for bass, and I saw what i considered to be a monster in about 4-5 feet of water. This was all the way at the opposite end of the lake where the lillies are. They also have free maps of the lake at the park office which show fish structure and depth. They aren't GREAT maps but they should do well to give a good idea of where fish could be.

If I had to bet $10, I would say your fish is a tiger. Tigers seem to have alternating solid and spotted stripe patterns just like yours. Check attached photo. Trues seem to have the same stripe throughout their body.

I'll look into that. Anything is better than nothing. Is the office by the swimming area?

No the office is actually the first right hand turn you can make when you come into the park. The swimming area is down the hill. Let me know if you actually plan on fishing there this year, it's my back yard and I would relish an opportunity to fish a little with a seasoned musky hunter.

Will do. I'm not familiar enough with the area to get directions, but I'll keep it in mind if I ever get up there. I'd love to see the lake become a good fishery. I'm sick of fighting the crowds on other lakes.
