| When do you set the hook....
Right away? or Swimming away?

|
| I've done best when the fish is heading away from the boat. |

|
| Just as soon as the fish is swimming away from the boat. If you aren't certain which way the musky is going (or if the fish seems to be remaining still), position your boat directly above the fish and apply a steady pull and it will start to swim away. Even in such an instance it seldom takes more than 10 to 15 seconds to have it swimming away. Then hit her HARD, twice; once to break the rubber band and a second time to fully set the hook. |

| I set the hooks right away. We have been using a small kaline(s.p.?) hook through the sucker's nostrils with a rubber band to attach it to a crosslock snap, and two wire leaders w/ trebles attached to the sucker on both sides with a small hook shrink wrapped to the "T'd" out trebles(attached to the crosslock). This past Sunday was a scrape the heavy frost off the windsheild, and wait until 11:00 a.m. until the livewell lid thawed out enough to get to the suckers type of day. Ironically the only two muskies boated (35" class) were caught on a small white buzz bait(within 10 mins./3:00 p.m.ish), and a 48"+?? class followed a super topraider. Water temp was 53-54. Who really knows when it's time to go to the live bait presentation except through the ice! |

| I will set the hook as soon as the fish is swimming away from my boat. Last night I watched a fish hit my sucker at boat side and had to move the front end over to get position for hook set. This fish did not move but just went to the bottom. As it was I ended up with empty hooks. I most likely should have waited some but would rather loose a fish or two than have a muskie swallow one of my rigs. Tis the season for suckers now. I have boated 4 muskies on suckers this last week and two casting. Last night I raised 3 and one hit on a sucker that I never raised. All three fish would not turn on the figure 8, but did not take the suckers hanging from my boat either. Bummerrrrrrrr. |

| Anon:
The Herbie rig and Maina's lift-off both utilize rubber bands through the suckers nostrils.
These are the rigs of choice. |
