Posts: 5 | I want to start Musky fishing this year on the St Lawrence River. I was wondering what rod size and weight would be good to start with. Also, what kind of reel should be looking at. I'm a New Yorker, I'm poor.

Posts: 980 | if you go the BPS route get the 8'6 XH rod with the higher ratio reel, thats a versatile action in any rod line you can throw little blades with it or you can toss big rubber. if youre left handed that reel doesnt come in a left handed retrieve. theres also tackle industries rod and reels like the shimano cardiff 400s which you can get on ebay for like 100 bucks

Posts: 458 | Do not go cheap on line and a leader. I would get 80 or 100 lb braided line and some good leaders from Stealth.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | I have found a lot of decent reels in the Cabelas Bargain cave over the years. I have noticed though that in the past 3-4 years they are harder to find in the cave... Also hit the auction sites and the buy/sell board here. Lots of good deals on lightly used reels.

Cardiff = $109 Gander Musky rod = $70 - $80 Seconded. Get the rod that you are comfortable with. Of course it has to be able to handle lines 15 to 30 lbs. I don't think you need to go more than 65 lbs. in a super-braid line.

Plus with all the shoals, rocks, humps, islands, timber, weeds, etc. go 80-100 lbs braid. those gander rods are ok but if you get any try and find the 8'6 XH in that one too though its only rated for a 2-6 oz lure
