| Hello to all,
I’m wondering what is the best way to repair cracks in the clear coat on wooden lures? I have some older Cobbs and custom gliders that have developed cracks in the clear coat and would like to repair them… if possible. Some are hair line cracks and others are much more severe; like on dive and rise baits where the nose of the lure hit rocks and the clear coat is busted up pretty good on the nose.
Can a guy just apply another coat of etex over the entire lure to reseal? Are there any preparations to this? Or other methods of repair? I’m afraid some may have taken on water within the wood as well and not sure if I reseal them if the expansion will crack the new clear coat?
Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | When I get lures to refinish with a cracked clear coat, I just strip it down and redo it. I don't etex anymore but the guys on here that do can help you out with this problem. Get a hold of Beaver, for sure I know he can help you out, the man is well rounded with knowledge when it comes to lure repair. |

| Thanks for your input Stan. How do you strip your lures down, heat gun?
In doing that, aren’t you striping everything then, sealer, paint, CC?

| Not Stan but yes, you would be taking it all off with the heat gun, the issue with just recoating over everything is added weight will/could make bait loose action and sink faster . It all depend show nice you want it to look . You can grind the crack out and put some two ton epoxy over the crack . That would seal it up . You can then fish it or sand it down and make it look sorta nice again . But, listen to the others here , they are the pros , I am just a hack . |

| Stripping lures is a touchy business. Some lure makers used very thin crap for sealer, and you should be touching them up after every trip. Others with thicker clear coat can have the cracks cleaned out and then wet-sand the entire lure and redo the E-Tex. They can be saved, or they should be stripped and repainted.
