| What size hooks are typically on musky lures? I need to get some replacement hooks for lures as I plan on cutting them to quicken the release with less trauma to the fish. What size should I be getting and what size rings should I get? Any specific brands you guys use? Thanks.

| 1/0 to 5/0 will cover most applacations, make sure you get some spare split rings too.
Eagle Claw and VMC make really nice hooks. |

| Jason is correct 1/0 - 5/0 in either VMC or Mustad is what I like. Bucher makes good split rings and so does wolverine. It's not nessary to cut hooks everytime, I find it's actually easier sometimes if you don't and can get it find with a good pair of pliers/hookouts/needle noses. But by any means if you can't get the hook out with out trouble cut it. I find they get out easier too if you net the fish and get all your tools ready and then the lure gets all caught up and it give the fish leverage and they unhook themselves a little bit if not totally. |

| i like the vmc and mustad hooks (wide gap round bend), size depends on the lure and the hook placement. don't care for the eagle claws, maybe just a mental thing, but don't trust the curved in beaks. my split rings are wolverine triple coils; easy to work with but stronger than he##! use the #5 customs instead of snaps now on my leaders(thanks chad cain!)

| I will second you on that Esox. I have changed to the split ring instead of the snap on the leader. |

| Boy...I have found the Eagle Claw hooks to be outstanding!! What I really like about them is they are a little thinner in Diameter from tip to barb, making penetration much easier. And that little bend in at the tip...saves sharpening all the way to the barb. God awful sharp with very few strokes, and I have yet to have a decent fish straighten one out....but then again..I just mentioned it, so with Murphy and his law...it'll be the next fish I catch.
I have found 3/0 to be decent, but am going to 5/0 on a few lures too...just to see if there is an advantage.

| You'll need split ring pliars for those most excellent Bucher rings. Also, Al Warner (Essox Maniac) would suggest you flatten the barbs to ensure easy releases. I watched Al catch a fiesty, fat 44'er recently on barbless hooks. |
