You bring up a fish throwing a double ten... Couple times around, and the fish sinks out of sight. I've always either thrown the same lure back or switched to a WTD bait. I've had limited sucess getting these fish to come back and eat. Has anyone tried jigging a bondy bait or even a fuzzy duzzit for those fish that sink out of sight? I know sometimes you can see them on the locator, and sometimes they just hide right under the boat. If they wanted the first lure you threw they'd have eaten it... Thoughts?

Sometimes they won't eat no matter what you throw back at them. You can try an erratic jerk it glidebait. Usually the fish don't do too far away. If this is the pattern try a big spinnerbait and drop it when they sink at the boat.

iv'e had pretty good success with a big white tiger tube or a mag dawg. no bomb cast, but just a short 15foot cast and jig it back in. sometimes right over the side of the boat.

I would leave the spot and come back at sun set or moon rise/set.

i'd still be figure 8ing her - lots of figure 8 fish that sank out of sight or under the boat only to come out after a few turns and crush it.

otherwise i'm probably coming back at dark.

Do like Dahlberg did and create a double armed bucktail that flutters down when that happens.

I agree with Guest on prolonged 8..Many fish that follow wont eat, but the first thing I would do in this situation, is get on your knee's and bury the rod to the reel and figure eight about twenty times.....does this work often no, but it works enough that it is shocking to me how many people stop their eight as soon as a fish first losses interest... you fish for 2-3 hours for a follow but you wont give a fish an extra 30 seconds when you know a fish is within 10 yards of your boat? I catch 4-5 fish every year that I think there is no way this fish will eat as it sinks out of sight ... what a thrill when that rod loads up "blind"

IA - I've tried that, and actually had a few eat. What I'm wondering is if it's better to get something down there right in front of them right away, something different, instead of sitting there doing figure 8 after figure 8 after figure 8, for the 1 in 10 chance that the fish might eventually come back up, especially when you have one that went around a few times already. My thinking here is that sometimes they just get tired of chasing your lure around and give up.

There is obviously no "right" answer becuase the one time you drop a bondy bait down to a sinking fish it could work........I want my bait in the water when a fish is near.. im not going to be jacking around trying to get a jig in the water...just my opinion.

Also I think you are giving the fish to much credit..if they follow it there is a great chance they will eat it (especially 10's). My best throw back lure has always been the bait I have on...I can get it back to them much quicker than again jacking around switching rods..and hoping they show interest in a different bait.

Going back on a fish is a different story..I may show them something "new" then.

plus 1

I've caught lots of fish over the years by just keeping the 8 going when most guys would think the fish is gone.

The other thing to do is if you are fishing with someone else have them throw at the fish if it is heading away from the boat. I have this conversation with my partner as soon as we get in the boat. If I can't get her to eat maybe he will.
