Posts: 1516 | How will this change how you transport live bait such as large suckers? How do you transport them now? Will that change ? If so how?

I would assume unless your a complete moron it won't change anything. You should be doing it the legal way whether they have roadside checks or not. JS

Posts: 1516 | Thanks for the comment althought it didn't answer the questions. I have never transported live bait like large suckers so I don't know. I kinda had planned to throw them in the livewell and be on my way. That would seem to be an illegal why to do it so I was asking for some suggestions. But, I really do appreciate guest's interest and suggestions.

Forgive me for the misinterpretation of your post. You can't transport live suckers in your livewell. They need to be in a seperate container that does not contain water from the lake you were fishing on. Your post seemed to imply if you were doing it the "wrong" way and now that they may have road checks what were you going to do. JS

I use a 15 gallon tupperware, aerator, and 12 volt cig lighter convertor I can plug the aerator into when it's on the boat. Only suckers attached to a rig go in the livewell inbetween spots, and no water from lake ever goes into the sucker bin. No suckers that were rigged ever go home with me. I use the instant water conditioner you get from walmart or pet shops along with water from the hose and it works great, never use water from any other lake or stream. Seems like a pretty good system, hopefully someone will tell me if I'm missing something. I've never been checked on the lake or otherwise.

as far as ive know you have to leave your travel water in your vehicle because the wardens dont know if you changed water or not while out on the lake

It was my understanding that you needed a receipt from the bait store. Anyone know if that's true?

Has anyone received or know someone who has received a citation dealing with bait transport? Usually by the time I'm sucker fishing in MN wardens are on to hunting season and seems like nobody is fishing anymore. I don't think sucker transport is a high enforcement priority at that time of the year.

Two guides got busted in the Detroit Lakes are last year. Other people I know were checked at the access. Wardens made sure there was a container in the truck with water in it that they brought the suckers to the lake in. As long as they had that they were O.K. If you didn't have any other way of showing you could transport the suckers other than the livewell you got a ticket. Don't think they were checked for reciepts. JS
