Posts: 12 Location: Normal, IL | Wayne Gutsch passed away on Friday from cancer. My Prayers go out to him and his family. I knew Wayne before he became famous. He used to come up to the Chippewa Flowage Campground each weekend in his pickup camper and pound the lake for muskies. I witnessed him bring in his first 30 pounder back in the 70's, and then a few days later he caught his second. One funny story, when I turned 18 the summer of 1975, I brought my best friend to the Flowage on my first vacation without my parents. We camped for two weeks at Lake Chippewa campground right on the shoreline. We spent two weeks drinking and pounding the lake with only one follow to show for it. The Friday evening before we were to leave for home, we had the boat out of the water and we were sitting around the campfire watching the sun set reflect on Flemings Bar and here comes Wayne drifting along the shoreline casting right in front of our campsite. Just as he is in front of us, he catches a musky! I'll never forget that moment!

Posts: 127 | He was definitely a man of few words when I met him, but an incredibly intelligent fisherman. I had the privilege of my first guided experience being with Wayne Gutsch. We all were throwing the same lure, he was in the back of the boat, and he caught all 3 muskies that were netted that morning. haha!

Posts: 2361 | As a bait maker, a creative tinker, and thinker, who tested his and other's ideas, and getting a couple or three, very right, including an elegant creeper, a bucktail design that ruled the flowage and other dark water lakes for years, and his magnification of the mudpuppy into the Tallywhacker, a neccessity for every musky tacklebox. As a caster, smooth as silk. As a musky fisherman, Wayne was "all in", and probably loved the fishing, and the Flowage, more than he should have.
