I generally don't use my trolling motor when working a spot, however, due to high winds I was forced to use it to hold position. ? I see a fish following 20 feet from the boat. Is it better percentage wise to keep it running or to shut it off? My gut tells me to leave it on. What do you think?

Leave it on a constant use as if you stop it the motor will make a noise and scare the fish off. I normaly will leave it on and only turn it off once a figure 8 fish is already hooked and running.

In my experience (which isn't much) Trophy musky is right. If I have it running at a constant speed they wont' run away and if its off they wont' run away, but if its off and I turn it on or on and I turn it off they fish seem to run away quicker.

I always leave mine on as well. I haven't noticed it spooking fish at all. Has anyone had a fish attack the trolling motor? I've had it happen a couple of times, at first I thought maybe there was something in the water that I ran into but never saw anything. Now I'm convined that some fish will come up and hit the prop.

I think the general rule of thumb is, if its on when it follows, leave it on, if its off when it follows, leave it off. I think the troller throws off a lot of vibration that would really shock the fish if it changed one way or the other near the boat.

The smallmouth guys down south have a little trick for the real-clear water situations, they cover the chrome shaft on their trollers with duct tape to eliminate the glare and glint that sunlight on the shaft produces. They think the fish learn to associate the glint with man/boat/danger. Don't know how that works with muskies, though. m

I run off and on.....I adjust the boat during the cast and take my foot off the trigger during most of the retrieve.

To leave on constant is fine too, I used to as a kid use my 20hp Merc as a kicker and leave it running(not quiet at all) and stuck fish. I did find that if I kicked it in gear when a fish was coming they took off.[;)]

Thanks for the info guys. I generally like to work a good spot with everything off(lights, depthfinder, motor)and just drift through. I run two finders,Interphase & hummingbird. The hummingbird seems to make the most noise. Some of the waters I fish are extremely tough, and I need every edge I can get..................RAZE
