Location: Bloomington, IL | I got a newer boat recently and unhooked the trolling motor batteries to store for winter. With the wamr weather recently (until today), I was looking at the electircal/wiring stuff and regarding the trolling motor wiring, noticed that there are 2 Red wires coming from the front, but only 1 Black wire. They're thick wires, so I only expected to see one red wire and one black wire, but there are two red wires.
The trolling motor wires are connected up front and then the wiring run from front to back, of course. In the back by the batteries, those two red wires connect to two connectors (or perhaps fuse switches) that two wires from the onbard chager are connected to as well.
My old boat had a 24V system, but I did not have an onboard charger, and I had two red wires and two black wires running from the front to the back - wires that were thinner.
My main question is, why would there be 2 Red wires and only 1 Black wire from the front? The wires are thick, so I only expected there to be one Red and one Black wire, if that makes sense.

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Take a volt meter and read between each red wire and the black wire. In all probability one red wire will be 24V and the other will be 12V. The one red wire and black wire will be on the outsides of the two batteries with a jumper in the middle of the batteries, - to +. The other red wire most likely will be attached to that jumpered point for the 12V. Some plugs have three pins, giving you the option to run either a 12 or 24 volt trolling motor. That's my guess. |
