Subject: Shimano Torium

What's everyone's opinion of the Shimano Torium? I've read a few threads, but didn't get very conclusive results. I'm looking at the TOR14 and the TOR16, which get 36" and 46" per turn, respectively. They're a reasonable price, but is it worth it? I'd (like to) be burning 10s, of course. Will they hold up and/or perform comparably to a Trinidad? I'm afraid it's the Corvalus of saltwater-type reels.

Not sure what's to "dislike" about the Torium. If you can cast a saltwater reel and you enjoy warp speed bucktailing, it's a gem at 160 bucks. As I've stated in another thread, it does the same thing as a Trinidad 14 and lasts just as long.

The only thing that's ever broken on mine was the bail lever spring after trying to force it when my spool was locked down. Now, when I've got a fish boat side, instead of forcing the lever I go for the star drag. Just a little user tip.

I had a Torium for a few years before I bought a Trinidad 16N and it never gave me any problems the only difference I found in use is the Trinidad is smoother and casts a little farther. But for the price I think the Torium is an excellent reel.

A wonderful brother of the Trinidad, made in Malaysia. Great value. Diecast frame, brass gears, multi disc drags, very little plastic. Very beefy parts! Seen many for general cleaning, never broken. Upgarding the drags to Carbon Tex and upgrading the lower drive shaft plastic bushing to ball bearing is easy. Also the spool has centrificul brakes to help with backlash!
Hope this helps. Mark- Dave's Reel service

The only Torium I would recommend for casting blades is the 14, the rest of the Toriums has no centrifugal brake. Pretty essential for reel used for Musky fishing.

The 14 Torium has 36" of line pickup, 15.7oz and has a counter balance handle for casting with a 6 spool braking system. The only things I would chance on this reel are the drag washers to Carbontex and replace the plastic bushing part #1104 under the drive shaft with a S.Steel bearing. . At $179.99 RETAIL good reel for the coin.
