Who's trying, what are we throwing, how's it going? I'm new in town from the East Coast--had a couple of sniffs my first fly outing on Minnetonka, no hookups yet. I'm tying and throwing Buffies http://www.flyfishsaltwaters.com/sbsbuffy.html best way I know to show a big profile without so much durn work. Also big dahlbergs. Any other suggestions or connections would be nice.

The Dahlberg divers would be my 1st choice. I also had a home tied fly that looked like a big Bumble Bee that caught a couple as well as several Pike. Blue and yellow seemed to be a good color pattern for me years ago. I also caught a couple one year on the the blue and yellow Dahlberg that I had attached as a dropper on my jig. Haven't done any of this in years but it was a lot of fun.

Hi,
I just picked up my new fly rod and reel and am ready to rock with this in the spring. I am taking the winter to practice on steelhead.
What do you guys prefer for leaders? I bought a Scientific anglers monofilament that the last 8 inches of is steel. I started making my own but not sure how they will cast? Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks
Kly

I can't believe a four foot long fish that will sit by the boat and give you the fin is going to be very leader shy, especially since some wire is necessary in the first few inches (at least) of the system. I'm no expert but I'd guess a flat length of 30 to 50 mono in front of your wire would be fine--maybe six feet? If the fish aren't shy of leader then your only concern is turnover, and since the bigger the fly the better I'd guess that you're not going to be winning any casting awards so not too many elegantly turned casts with a ten-inch fly. I know I'm double-hauling hard and getting some u.b.e's (ugly but effective) out about sixty to seventy feet with the synthetics and a bit less with the big dahlbergs.

To that end two questions: 1: what is state-of-the art wire leader these days? I have a lot of saltwater stuff from my former life and I've just rigged some typical bluefish-style leaders, but I'd like to find something that won't fail but is as stealthy as possible. And 2: Is wire (of whatever type) less visible than mono? Is there an opinion out there for muskie rigging that favors heavy mono over wire, or will they just chop that and laugh?

I've sold a bunch of the Sci. Ang. Wire Tipped Leader here at the store. It's the Pike/Barracuda leader with an 8"/38# wire leader and then a crosslock snap.
McKenzie flies have intrigued me and I have those coming into my stock also. Some really pretty flies that look like they should be musky meals!

Keep pounding the water. If you see me on tonka in a 16' red lund throwing 4/0 - 6/0 flies come up and say hi. Right now I've got tendinitis in both elbows and shoulders and can use the break. this winter I need to hit the gym. fortunately in MN that is a long time to heal. I use foam divers this time of year, but friends are using whistlers. Good luck.

I use a two piece 9'6" lamiglas handmade rod for a #8-9. I use a weight forward #8 fly line, a 1 yard tippet of 14lbs test nylon + a 20cm singlestrand leader of 0.7mm diameter Stainless steel + a coastlok snap. No light fishing here!

I use big flies of 8-10" long with a single hook size 8/0 or a tandam fly of two hooks size 6/0, joined together by a swivel + sevenstrand. I mainly use fur, bucktail (of 6" long), glitter strands, saddle hackles and finnish fur fly material + icelandic sheep hair (very long, over 8" long).
