Check your regs. You may be limited to using them where they were trapped.

I have been watching this post myself for replies as I am in the same boat trying to catch suckers without much luck.

What kind of bait would you put in a trap to attract suckers? Just something stinky?

Thanks.
Dave

Onions are great bait (half of one) or One bar of ivory soap

I had to bump this up, forum search was not working for me and id also like more information on the subject like how to make a trap or where to buy one and what bait to use and such. Google just refers me back to this forum and others with very very little information. Ive got a big holding tank and id like to catch some next summer/early fall for fishing to save some $$

I've caught a number of them fishing rivers and shallow creeks with a jig and a power grub. Not exactly what you are looking for, but it is an option. Plus you get the fun of catching them and then getting to use them for bait.

Nothing like fresh suckers! Well, except for the poop, that is.

Frabill makes some good options. Just use some cutters to make the entrance holes larger. Place the trap with the current.

too small, you could use the basic idea and design of the links for the traps above but youre not gonna get the size suckers you want. I use traps like the one above and the biggest creek chubs i get are 10 inchers.

I use a regular minnow trap and I enlarge the entrance holes with a shovel handle. I chop up onions and mix peanut butter with the onions and spread on bread then form into a tight ball place in the toe of a knee high stocking secure with a knot, hang in center of trap with knot on the outside. Place trap in slight current (inline with current) and the suckers and chubs will swim into the trap. That crawfish trap that Mullhead might work better than a minnow trap.

Except he would then be limited to fishing where they were caught. Targeting them in a lentic system is much, much tougher than targeting them in a lotic system.

Now if this guy is fishing a river, like the Wisconsin, then your idea would work great. But we aren't privy to such information from his original post!

So if you want a big trap get a large piece of pvc pipe(6"or 8" round) 36" or 48" long. Drill a lot of holes in it. Like a wash tub, debur the inside. Use a large tapered funnel on each end attached with bolts and wing nuts so you can clean it out. Cut the funnels so you have about a 2.5 or 3" entrance hole. Zip tie a brick in the on the outside to help it sink. Remember the larger they are the easier it is for someone else to find.

I just made one thats 30" around by 50 " long . I went to Farm store and bought metal meshing rolls and lots of zip ties made an entrance cone that is as long as my forearm on one side only tied a weight on the other side . I havent the flowage i fish has creeks and rivers galore . Ive gotten suckers carp blueglills and two unlucky muskrats this fall . Spent a grand total of 23 bucks on the hardware to make it and saved at least a pile of cash . The ivory soap trick works but bird suet works great for suckers . I got a bunch of carp with soap . Carp can be used as bait as long as you dont transport them right i didnt know so i didnt use um?

check your local regulations, in most state traps big enough to cath useable suckers are illegal without a commercial fishing license,
-here is indiana's rule - Minnow traps cannot exceed 24 inches in length, with the opening of the trap no larger than 1 inch in diameter.
-here is wisconsins - With traps no more than 24 inches long and 16 inches in diameter or square with a throat measuring one-and-a-half inches or less. All traps must bear their owner’s name and address and be emptied at least once every 48 hours.
