I can get a great deal on a new 300te, but I want to put it on a St Croix Big Dawg and use it for pounders/cowgirls/Big Cranks ect. I am wondering If I can get enough 80lb braid on the 300te or should I just fork out more cash for the 400te?

You would get plenty of line on ,but would lose a lot of inches per crank on the retrieval. Especially a bomb cast with wind. I would shell out the extra money unless a reel a little bit smaller is a lot more comfortable.

I had a 400 te and still have the 300 te didn't care for the 400 te so I sold it and love the 300 te it's palms reel nice for my hand size and cast very well for me and it's very dependable I throw any bait I got with this reel without any problem.
When I get enough money save up I'm buying another 300 te I personally think it's by far the best reel I ever owned.

If you can get a good deal on a 300, buy it in a heartbeat. There's only a 40-yard difference in line capacity (400TE:160yd/20lb mono vs. 300TE: 120yd/20lb mono), and the 300 will do everything the 400 will do, with the exception of the slightly slower speed. I really don't think it will be that noticeable though.

If you look at the 300 and 400 side-by-side there isn't much of a noticeable difference between the two size wise. Other 300 and 400 Shimano models are noticeably larger or smaller, depending how you want to look at that. PIKEMASTER will have to weigh in on the spool size difference, but if I were to guess I would say the 400 is only slightly wider and slightly deeper than the 300.

40 yards actually translates to quite a bit in this case - especially since it is an additonal 33% capacity.

The reels also will have the same depth of spool - the width is the only difference (as noted by the identical gears and max rate of retrieve). So that means we are loosing 33% of our capacity due to width.

Loosing capacity this way means that our rate of retrieve will vary to a much greater extent on a longer cast than it would on the 400 size especially using larger diameter line. Width is key for a less variable rate of return (can be reduced by using a smaller line size). Just think about how line comes off a reel - the more width a spool has, the more line has to be removed to reduce the overall spool diameter. This would allow for longer casts as well, as the higher spool speed will allow more line to come off as well.

300 vs 400 should be a choice motivated by line choice.

It's like using the toro 50 vs. the toro 60. You'll lose a little speed at the beginning of long casts, otherwise virtually the same reel and it will most likely be more comfortable. I have an Okuma 250 that is the most comfortable reel I own, even more so than low profile reels. For sure go for the TE 300, just don't use 100 lb line with it and make sure you spool it FULL.

On the 300 if U use 65lb braid, then go with the 300, on 80lb braid if U go with the 300 over a 400 size reel, then for about the first 10 turns of the reel handle after a long cast U will loose about 1-2 inches of line pickup per turn of the reel handle over a 400 size reel, so a 400 will bring in about 20" of more line then over a 300, so U have to turn the 300 handle about 1, maybe 2 more time more then a 400. If U are using 100LB braid go with a 400 or 60 size reel. The 300 or 50 size reel will plam better then a 400 or 60 size reel. I use a 50 Toro reel and a 300TE for 65lb and 80lb braid and for 100lb braid a 400 or 60 size reel, I like how the 50 and the 300 size reel plams over the 400 or 60 size reels. On the 300 size reel, I can spool about 100 yds of 80lb braid so a 300 yd spool of braid will last for years.

The 300te cast much smoother because of the narrower width across the face of the spool which leads to less resistance on the cast and to me it cast further with less effort.
I had both the 300te and the 400te on same rod and was casting the same bait the 300te cast easier to me and further. ( My personal opinion) That's why I sold my 400te.
