| I always am happy when the lakes turn over and temps drop below 55 degrees, as that signals the best creature bite of the year. I fish wedlines where there are still green weeds, and rock edges all fall. I like the 6 to 7" creatures with 1/2 to 5/8 oz heads, and 5/0 hooks.
The tems here the next few day look like about 40 degrees avarage, so BRING IT ON!!!
Beav!!
Let's go get a few of those Pelican fatties, man! My creature box is ready to go, and the reef hawgs/Undertakers/SUicks are all sharp...[8)] |

| Steve,
Are you taking advantage of this pattern all the way until ice up, or is it best just after turn over. I'm not going to get to much of an opportunity to get out during October, but plan on finishing the season pretty strongly in November. Is the creature bite as good in November?
Thanks,
Brad |

| Steve,
What tackle(rods reels and line ) do you prefer? Also what about retrieves?I go back + forth b/t flippin stick and heavy spinning gear. I think I still have some of your creatures I bought at the North Trails store in Elcho a looong time ago. Steve |

| The North trail Store in Elcho..That WAS al long time ago. I use a spinning outfit most of the time. I just bought a 6.5 to 1 retrieve casting reel from bass pro, and found that to be acceptable for speed up at Cass. I like 14# to 17# mono, as I lose too many oversetting the hook with the superlines. |

| My two biggest muskies came with that technique on a brutal whitecap snowy day in late november. They came 20 minutes apart on a rocky 20 ft. deep ledge that dropped into 65 ft.[;)] |

| If you don't have a rod/reel set up like steve mentioned I have been having good success with lighter weight 7 7'6" rod and Garcia's C4 reel. Instant anti reverse and a 6.2:1 ratio. Works pretty well for getting them to "pop" off the bottom...
Easy on the hookset though, as steve said it's easy to "overset" with the heavier tackle and line. Thin/sharp jig/creature hooks will penetrate fairly easy.
I'm still in a major learning curv with this Steve and MuskyOne are the guys to learn the most from.
Halloween is "Creature Time"...[] [;)]

| I have a couple of jigs that I make myself for throwing some of the "beefier" plastics. Both have a 7/0 hook in them. I prefer 65# Tuff Line XP for this application becauseof the hook size. When fishing the 7" to 9" lizard on my standard jig I also opt for 17# to 20# mono. Works excellent for me. |

|
| I may have to give the jig and reapers a try.
My vertical jigging experience has been limited to Fuzzy Duzzits. I use them on the same type of structure that Steve mentions and do well with them. This year though I will try the creatures. God bless.

| 3 Jigs I use in the fall....Bull dawg (crank it in SSSLOOOWWW and with short easy pulls), 8" Shaker (REALLY SLOW glide, basically holds it in place, up and down, like a jig)....and the meat, fish comes up to say hi to the sucker, jig it up and down to entice the big momma!

| muskyone, why do you use mono instead of dyneema? Over here we use dyneema because it enables us to keep the bait close to the boat when we are jigfishing the bottom (vertically jigging, not casting). Less resistance of the line keeps the bait closer = more control and better strike registration.
Can you still use dyneema when it freezes? I have heard about problems with the line freezing on the reel's spool but I haven't experienced that yet myself.
I've been fishing a lot with the jig/lizard combinations you sent me but no strikes yet. Some extra tips are welcome; if you don't mind.
I have been fishing them while casting and I sort of let them sink to the bottom and then give twitches with the rod pointing upwards. This makes the lizard jump from the bottom to about 1 foot off the bottom and then I let it sink again. I also tried straight retrieving the bait with short pauses to let the bait sink a bit but I find that that the jumps makes the spinnerbait skirt and lizard move a lot more. Just looks a lot better to me. I fished the same spots with the magical 8" reef hawg and got a strike each time I fished there. Weird! Maybe the water isn't cold enough yet? It's 22°C here now! It's summer, better than summer. Last year it was 10°C!
I've been using the 30lbs power pro, the calcutta 251 and a st-croix premier casting 7' rod (2-piece) with a casting weight of 0.5-1.5oz.
what's the difference between reapers and lizards? How big can you get the reapers? I saw some tiny ones in a Joe Bucher tape but those were tiny!!

Read the articles I have in the article section of MuskieFIRST regarding creature fishing, that will help.[] |

| read them! Good stuff! []
sworrall, what's the difference between a reaper and a lizard?
Which sizes are sold for these creaturs? I have some 6" lizards I got from muskyone.
Don't you get a lot of tailbiters? Biting off the tail of the creature (mainly reffering to lizards now) instead of grabbing the jighead (with its single hook)? We use a stinger treble on shads and twisters when jigfishing or trolling in wintertime. |
