Stopped at the grociery store and picked up Nov. issue of MHM last night and read the article on verticle jigging.

How many of you regularly imply this tactic?
What's your success been?
Favorite lures/etc..?

Personally I don't do as much of this as I probably should..I know it works and I've got Fuzzy's and Big/Lil' Joes and some Dawgs but I get bored doing it.

Curious on your thoughts...?

Thanks,

Mark,
I've had a little success this year jigging the New Lindy Tiger Tube 8" at depths of 25 feet and working it like a jerkbait over weedbeds.

Larry,

I had a killer day early this spring over weeds with the small model, I think it was like 6-7 fish in one day, one was a pike but the rest were ski's...

Never thought of letting the big model sink down, you adding any weight to get it to drop faster or just letting it go slow..? might not be a bad thing..let's em look at it.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,
When using the 8" Tiger Tube deep here on the Niagara River with average water current of 3.0 mph,I add 1 ounce weight with the rubber center to the wire connecting the trailing trebble hook. For over the shallow weedbeds I add a medium grubtail to the back trebble hook.I have 29 Muskies to 48" on Tiger Tubes 8",25 of those have been this year. try using large shads of 7"+ long and add a tail treble. A second bait that is good for this was f fishing is a large rattling lipless lure like a bill lewis supertrap. A third good lure is a fuzzy duzzit or other large metal jigbait. A last bait that we use is a large narrow spoon, more like a lead pirk

Good info guys, keep it coming...

Larry....grub tail sounds interesting. Thanks

Divani...I have had success with Fuzzy's I probably need to use these more than I do.

My vertical jigging experience has been limited to Fuzzy Duzzits.

I enjoy vertical jigging. Gowing up fishing the Mississippi River, veretical jigging the flats between wing dams and the areas aroung the lock and dams was the chosen method for success. So for me the transition to jigging for muskies has been easy.

I just vertical jig the breaks right off of the back of the boat. Usually get a couple of fish per year doing this. When the water and air temps are really cold sometimes this is the only thing that works as casting results in nothing but frozen reels. Good luck and God bless.

I like the Fuzzy Duzz it for when I sucker fish late in November. I've had a few fish hit them, but I think it attracts the fish to the suckers.

Fuzzy What? Tiger Who?

You youngins sure have funny names for fishing lures these days...[:0]

I must be an old fart....

I use a 2 ounce jig that I mold myself and I hook a 15 - 18 inch sucker minnow with
a wire stinger and I slow troll and jig the bottom areas where rock meets mud, anywheres from 20 - 50 feet deep in late October and early fall..

Jig/Minnow jigged for walleyes works good, so I figured it would work for muskys and all I had to do was upscale the terminal tackle.

Mark,

I use the Fuzzy Duzzit in the fall and have had some good success. The big Mag model will kill your arm after a while, I use the regular size and work it just off the bottom or structure. Short pulls of about 2-3 feet work best. You have to be on your toes and waiting for the hit, the fish will hit on the up or the drop. When they hit, it seems like they come up right away so you have to be able to take up line as quick as possible to ensure there is no slack in the line. It never fails that when you get tired and try and switch hands that is when you will get a hit. It is pretty hard to reel in a fish if you switch hands and the reel handle is on the wrong side. My advice is to not switch hands and to use the two handed style so when you get bit you can take up line as quick as possible.

There have been days when the vertical jig was the only action of the day, a very important part of your arsenal!!!!

Good luck!
