I've been a diehard Calcutta fan , but picked up a Morrum on closeout the other day and got a great deal. I'm wondering how they hold up to the abuse. Any opinions? Steve

I have two Calcutta 400's and two Morrum 6600's. My Calcuttas see more time/abuse and are even a year or two older.... and never a problem.

My Morrum's, however, have had their share of problems. Took me three purchases to get one that worked (two had broken thumbars right in the box!). I have had the anti-reverse go out on each of them. In fact, the anti-reverse was slipping again this weekend. The handles suck too.... as I pull the pads off all the time and occasionally bend the metal arms when get too excited during a hookset. On the flip side, I enjoy how the Morrum fits in my palm, has a higher gear ratio for burnin' bucktails and topwater, and they cast VERY nice. Thus, I put up with their inadequecies. The Morrums are nice reels... I just don't feel the price tag is AS justified as the Calcutta.

Just one man's opinion[]

I have had a 6600 and a 5500 Morrum for two years and only had a minor levelwind/worm gear problem on the 6600...

One thing to keep in mind, there are so many machined parts and metal gears in the Morrum, that there is no tolerance for dirt and debris... If you keep them clean and well oiled they will perform flawlessly, once they get some dirt and grime in them they will start giving you problems...

I also have a 6600 Tornament Pro, and have used it well over the past 3 years without a single problem. It has a similar low profile, and it is equally easy on the hands...

If Shimano made a low profile reel I would give it a try, but until then I will stick with Abu Garcia...

Just my personal preference...

I have 5 Morrums going back 3 years and have had the anti-reverse slip on 1 of them. As posted before, this is due to dirt/grime etc.

The only other problem I've had is sometimes pulling the rubber grips off of the handles...usually when I'm running a twitch or jerkbait. I superglued them on.

My dad has 6 morrum 6600's and they are nice. The only thing i will tell you is make sure you completely engage the free spool lever before you cast. if you don't it makes a terrible noise. My calcutta does it too and so do my 6600 tournaments.
