There have been several anonymous violations of our use policy over the past several weeks (refer to http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/boards/register.asp especially the part about harrassment).

The violations have been narrowed to a few specific isp's, with most of them coming from attbi.com, prsev.net (also AT&T), and an AOL proxy at ag03.proxy.aol.com. I am waiting on these companies independent review of their logs. Once a fix has been made on their end the internet service of the violators will be terminated. The more times the postings are made, the stronger the case.

I'll keep you updated on our progress, as weeding out the bad apples means a better experience for all.

Thanks,

Zach

I've been kicking around a few ideas.

What I will probably do, and I don't think this has been tried before, is to check each request to the board post page. If you are trying to access the board post page using one of the "blacklisted" IP's, but are not loggged in as a registered user, you will taken to the registration page. In other words, the only way to post to the board from a blacklisted ip will be to register. The only way to register from a blacklisted ip is if you have a valid email address that is not yahoo, hotmail, etc. Or, perhaps, all anonymous posts from blacklisted IP's will have to be confirmed by clicking on a link sent to a valid email address. Or, all anonymous posts from blacklisted IPs are moderated and approved by an editor before appearing on the board.

We have alot of options, but I would like to expose the few offenders I've tracked down first.

Should completely solve the problem over time. Our days of reading offensive, unsigned posts quickly is nearing an end. Of course, we continue to encourage anonymous posting within the scope of our policies. We place a high value on the ability for someone to post anonymously, for whatever reason they choose. We place no value on posting anonymously for the purpose of getting off cheap shots.

I can safely say that we are smarter than these guys, as if that wasn't obvious already. Yeah.

Zach

Why don't you just make it mandatory to log on like on other boards if this becomes a problem?

Bill,
The idea is to allow EVERYONE access to the board for constructive commentary, questions, or stories we all enjoy. We only wish to avoid the sniping, bashing, or whatever one wishes to call some of what occured while everyone was fishing last weekend.

I personally could care less if someone takes a shot a me. I have been working in the fishing business for near 30 years, and have been called way worse than what has been sent my way here by folks looking right at me, in person. If one wishes to stick one's nose out into the public, one may expect that not everyone will be easy to get along with. Just the way it is!

The visitors who shoot ( with bad intent) at someone while hiding behind virtual trees, and don't step out into the open for an intelligent discussion in an attempt to clear the air, are obviously doing so ONLY to disrupt the atmosphere on the Message Board here at MuskieFIRST. We have made it clear in the past that is not acceptable.

I can guarantee Zach will find a streamlined way to eliminate the true bashers, while encouraging other anonymous posts throughout the OutdoorsFIRST venue.[] [] [] []

I was thinking along the same lines as Bill at first. Although it does defeat the purpose of the board. After reading Zach's options and seeing his ability to track things down seems like he has things well under control.

Personally I think making them register with valid email address etc. is the best course. I'm betting that slim to none of them will follow up and register to post.

Keep tracking them Zachdog.

Right on. That sounds like a good solution.

Bill: The best reason for not requiring registration is that it makes it easy and convenient for ANYONE to post. I don't necessarily buy someone's reasons to want to remain anonymous, within that context, but it certainly makes it easier for someone just passing through to become part of the site without havign to jump through hoops. I know I have lost potential members on my site because of requiring registration, but that's just the path I picked. It sounds like Zach is getting it under control, I applaud his efforts, and I think these guys are doing a great job.
