I was wondering how many 50 inchers do you guys think are caught during a years time. This includes US and Canada.

I know how hard they are to come by, I have yet to land my first one over 50! But that is all going to change this weekend!!!!!! (I keep saying)

Well,

If you go by the number of 50"er's that make there way into my boat.. then ZERO! [;)]

To be honest, I would say that around 175 50+ inchers are caught each year.

I would guess more then you think. I know one guy with 5, another with 3 and a nother with 2 this year. None of them fish more then the average guy and none of them live close to great water.

I would have agreed with Jason...a lot more then 49"s. There are 2,521 fish in the MI db between 49-51". 669 of them are 50". 812 of them are 49". Could it be that muskie anglers are more honest then we think?

LOL, all those 49" fish point out one of the disadvantages of fishing with a partner.

I would guess in the under 200 range also.

I don't have a clue but I can tell you it is more likely to be a hell of a lot more then you guys think. You look at how many are reported into MI and then multiply that by 10 and you will get an idea.

You would be surprised of some numbers some guys are doing unreported but to a few. [;)]

I think there are definately good years vrs. bad years for big fish. However with more and more anglers fishing today, more 50"'s are being caught. Each year, there are more and more 50's turned in the lunge lof at MI. I think its close to 200 this year, several years ago it was lucky to see 50 50's turned in.

I fish in KY, and generally there arent going to be as many 50's caught, cause they aren't as many as northern lakes. Plus a lower size limit and higher morality rate with high heat and fish usually expire around 10 yrs, remember the old/current state record of scott Flatts was only 9 yrs old. I would say annualy cave produces around 15 50's, green 8 50's, buckhorn 3 50's, and probably 3 or so from the rivers. Now take a place like St. Clair, LOTW, Niagra, St Lawrence, Ottawa where 10 or more can be caught in a day!

I have also wondered why there are usually spikes in record data where there are more 50's than 49's, or more 40's than 39's. I have seen this through the past 5 yrs with being the release chair with the KY chapter of MI

Just my thought, ive came with a 1/2" in 14 yrs of fishing for them.
