Location: 0 | All i ve ever used is black steel leaders and was wondering if anyone thought that by switching to a flurocarbon leader if that could make followers more likely to hit on the figure 8?

Posts: 518 Location: Cave Run Lake KY. | YEP, found that out on lake of the woods, I got out fished by my partner who had a 9' rod and flurocarbon leaders. crazy big fgr. 8's and flurocarbon leaders. Right now I looking for a 9'rod and will be making my own flurocarbon leaders. We all caught fish but he caught the most and his first 50"er. great trip 6, 12 hr. days of ponding fish by 3 boats with 7 fishermen. all togather we boated 23 fish and had more than 60 fish under the boat. We did have one fish under the boat that look like a56"er. Take Care and buy some FLUROCARBON. Marv.

Location: 0 | Thanks for the input, to make your own flurocarbon leaders do you just crimp it the same way you would a steel leader?

Posts: 245 | muskie! nut - 9/27/2011 11:58 PM Well think about it. You have half your rod in the water doing a figure 8 and you are worry if the fish sees your black wire leader? Someone explain to me how a fluorocarbon leader will make a difference in this case. Another thing to worry about, fluorocarbon can be cut- that's a fact. Steel can also be cut - that's a fact. Also, steel will most likely kink and then break, i feel that mono leaders give the lures better action aswell...

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I'm not sure where this post went wrong. Is it winter already? Though I don't really think that a fluoro leader will make it more likely for a fish to hit in the 8 than a wire leader would, I do use fluoro leaders. Will the fluoro cause more fish to hit INSTEAD of follow? Maybe. More likely to hit in the 8? Well, I would guess not less likely. Granted the rod will be in the water, and that is plenty visible, but it's between 14-24" away as well, versus connected right to the bait. When you figure 8 a fish you bring it within a couple feet of the fish too, and I'm guessing they can see the boat too. It's one of those things we'll never really know the answer to. I was nervous to switch from solid wire leaders to fluoro, but I've been making my own with #150 Seaguar, knots and crimps and good components, and have never had an issue. I often catch more fish per fluoro leader than I would a wire leader, and since I make my own I'm pretty free with discarding a leader and making another one. Durability is better in some ways, and visibility should be less. Do they catch more? Not sure - I caught fish using both, but I haven't found a reason to switch back to wire yet. TNmusky, don't let this post discourage from asking more questions. You'll usually get more friendly replies than this. One thing - if you switch to fluoro use good stuff, and at least 130 pound. I use 150 and like it. Tucker

Posts: 36 | Not only the rod in the water but the lure which looks nothing like a fish attatched to the flourocarbon.
