Subject: dipsy divers ?

Living next to Lake Erie I have a few dipsy divers kicking around and was courious if has anyone ever tried pulling down bigger baits with these ? Something like a 10 inch Jake ? I have a shortage of deep diving baits right now and was thinking that it might work if I tighten down the set screw a bit ?

Ferd, thanks for posting this. I just bought one 4" diameter and was going to ask some questions. What is the best size and will the 4" one handle jakes and shallow raiders?

Dipsy's work great when pulling spoons, Dodger / flies or Rapalas around, but for really hard pulling baits they won't get out to the side much.

A Dipsy diver is a directional diver that was designed to dive back and out to the side. With most musky trolling situations, I have never seen the need to get down much deeper that 25 or 30 feet. Most baits with the help of a snap weight will get there.

If you need to get off to the side, I would run a planner board before a Dipsy. Unless I'm out on Lake Michigan, them I'll run 2 Dipsy's on each side of the boat. There great out there!

Not to be redundant but dipsies will not do anything for deep divers however they can work wonders for shallow divers and non-diving lures, take shallow invaders, sledges and bulldawgs trolled behind dipsy divers it gets them down and away from the boat as well as adding to their actions.
As for getting lures deeper adding lead balls in front of the lure gets them down you can do this with three way swivels or in line, lead core line and trolling wire work as well.

The lead ball works great out on the great lakes for Salmon but never had any success for muskies. I don't run them on a 3 way swivel. I split rig a 1 pound ball to the lower hole on a Luer Jensen trolling ruder, then attach the snap to the front hole (I run this rig off the back of the boat with wire line) . For Salmon, I attach a rubber snubber to the back hole and then a 6 foot 20 pound Fluorocarbon leader to a spoon or Dodger / fly. When I tried this rig for muskies, I would not use a rubber snubber and would run a 50 pound mono leader.

Another option is a Gibbs Weight.A Gibbs Weight as with a Snap Weight can be put anywhere up your line between your leader and rod tip.The best part about a Gibbs Weight is when the fish strikes the Gibbs Weight releases and slides down your line to the swivel at your leader.Being able to place the weight up the line takes less action away from the crankbait. But for better control with depth nothing is better then 45 lb test Leadcore Line to get you down and follow the path of the boat as you skirt the deep structure edge.

Todd , Ferd :
I don't believe a dipsy will handle a Jake ,may possibly handle a Shallow raider .They will definitly handle B-Flats ,Suicks ,spoons ,small J-plugs ,Rapalas and any bait that does not have extreme pull working against
the diver that is trying to pull in IT'S own direction.
It will handle hot baits like a Bull Dog.Has any one thought again of using a dodger as a spoon behind the dipsy. There are dodgers of many colors that when supplied with a Siwash or treble can be a hell of a spoon . And yes
Ferd ,I've run dipsys and downriggers out of Silver Creek ,
and that whole end of Erie. No one realizes what a wonderful place that end of New York is .....
luck to both
