I have to dump this POS '03 Explorer.  I live in rural north and must have 4WD, an interior that can handle rods to 8', a backseat for my dog and decent gas milage.  I''m towing a light boat and travel a lot.  I have about $12K to spend.

What would you recommend I check out?

I would suggest looking for a Subaru Outback. Excellent awd system, 24-26mpg and other amenities your looking for. Tough to find a truck with a good fwd/awd system (toyota) for that kind of money unless your ok with high mileage.

Take the 12k and put it down towards a good American Made 4wd....... You won't get much for 12k these days.

Or you could put 6k down towards a "nice" Ranger and 6k down towards a "better" truck.
........OR...........Just get married, then you won't have to worry about the 12k.....

I love my GMC 4dr but if gas is an issue my 2007 1500 gets 11.1 mpg average and has since I got it 3 years ago. You would also have to go back about 5-8 years to hit $12k for a sales price...

12k doesn`t get much now adays, look for a deal if you don`t mind waiting,if you have 12k to spend then put it down on a truck worth about 18-24k,if you can only finance 12k then take your time,my 05 trailblazer with a v6 pulled my 17ft tracker with a 75hp just fine, but after 120,000 miles it started to give me probs so I got a 04 sierra with higher miles but figured if I was going to dump money into a veichle I would rather dump it into something nicer than the trailblazer,I paid 12 for the truck, couldn`t find anything with 50k-70k with a price tag under 18k.

Toyota Tundra. Look at the 07s, they are cheaper. Seen plenty out here with under 20k miles for 20-25k dollars.

Ranger,

I recommend you get on Autotrader and enter in your search criteria. Check back daily(or get an email when a new hit comes along) because good deals do come along... But they go fast. A friend of mine was in the same ballpark as you and by working at it every day he got a Jeep Grand Caravan with 65K on it for about 12k. He is happy with that vehicle. I did the same thing looking for a truck but didn't want to go high miles, so I ended up buying new.

Spoke to my nephew yesterday, who found a salvage title 08 F150 for $13,000. It was salvage titled because it was vandalized in CA, the owner took the check from the insurance company, then the ins co. salvage titled it. They had it fixed and the 2nd owner sold it on Craigslist. Alot of folks get decent deals there as long as you check the vehicle out yourself first. Just another option.

You could buy a 2003 /2004 Toyota 4 runner with the force v-8 for around that much. Tows 7500 pounds and will run forever.

this is sick... to many people telling you to go toyota. picked my 04 chevy ext cab with 48 thousand on it 3 years ago no rust dents scratches etc. with rhino lining and a leather cover. only thing is no power windows, for 12,280. was looking for almost a year and drove to get that one on the spot. and yes i did check the car fax... did talk them down from over thirteen and the original sticker on the window said 17 something but that was when gas was at its peak so the truck market was way down but still. the deals are out there just keep looking.

You get what you pay for and Toyotas obviously hold their value better and also you can tell by the start of his post he has already experienced owning a Big 3 suv. If he needs reliability and longevity for 12K looking at an older toyota sounds like a great way to go. BR

I would look at a trailblazer, it is V6 with good horsepower and towing capability. Plus get mid 20 gas for a 4x4 far better than any truck you will touch for that price.

The best 4x4 for 10-12 grand would be without question the Toyota Landcruiser.

I would look for a 100 series landcruiser made between 1999 and 2007. You have room, size, capablility, locking differentials, and all the comfort and refinement in a legendary vehicle. It will give you 17 on the highway and around 14 in the city.

Keep in mind this is a true Full Time 4WD. It's not the pathetic crap they make nowadays where your 4WD kicks in after you've begun slipping.

Take a test drive in one and you'll be a Landcruiser owner forever.

I got my 01 GMC 5.3 for under 11K with only 85K on it , gets around 14 pulling a 17' glass boat. We also have a Trailblazer and I wouldn't pull my boat far with that, my 5.3 gets way better milage and a much nicer ride than the 05 Trailblazer. Toyotas are a nice truck to, my buddy has one, great ride but I find the seats less than desirable to me personaly...

03, Chevy suburban 1500 LT, i don't have a complaint about this truck, bought it new, and have never had an issue. Used they are in your price range right now and that includes leather, premium sound and all that. The 5.3 some would call a bit small but I get just over 17 on the highway, and around 13 pulling the crestliner 1750. they come with a removable 3rd seat so the puppy has all the room it could want, plus it can seat 8 people comfortably with the seat in.... 100,000 on it now, and will drive it to 200 if I can.

I have a 02 tahoe, now retired as full time woods duty, that has 247,000 on her. Originall owner and was my daily driver, body work is a little dinged up from the woods now but she drives just fine yet.

Would not hesitate to but a used Tahow or subrb from a soccer mom with 100,000 miles on it. Lot of life yet left in them (the truck that is )

I've had good luck with Jeeps, picked mine up last fall with 37k miles on it for $8,500. Loaded with leather the works, had to look around for a bit but there are plenty of deals out there right now.
