After landing a fish and while measuring don't forget that your net is over the side of the boat and that's it's fallen into the abyss!!

Run over and start fishing around someone that has either just caught/or is releasing a fish. People that follow measure boats are worthless.

Don't fall out of the boat, loosing a rod/reel to the bottom of the lake, with the trolling motor still on, boat sailing away, leaving your boat partner clueless as to just what in the sam heck happened to his boat partner.

Don't cut a fellow angler off - you KNOW which way he's going.

Don't move in where someone just caught a fish and left to have it registered - you KNOW their coming right back in 15 minutes...

These are things you CAN do, it's not illegal, but it's inconsiderate. Tournament fisherman in particular circuits are a band of brothers all out there for the same purposes and most of us know each other or at least recognize each other. Respect on the water is crucial to having fun on AND off the water during events.

Don't drop your fish on the bump board and let it flop back in the lake...

Don't fish out of a boat that is brighter than a welding arch.

Don't mark waypoints were someone just caught a fish. Had it done to us a few times.
Don't yell follow when other boats are around you. They can figure it out when you are figure 8'ing longer and deeper than normal.
Take a nap. Sorry only did it once because the night before was too much fun and the morning was rough.
Don't tell someone that was a nice fish you just lost. Had that happen to me also. Fish came flying out of the water with the dbl cowgirl clanking out of the corner of its mouth. Made me sick to my stomach.

Don't be a sore loser if you come up in 2nd place. Veil your disappointment, congratulate the winners, and be happy that:
a)you went fishing today
b)you placed in a tourney

I hate seeing pictures of 2nd place winners looking and acting like their dog just died. Don't overtly beat yourself and your partner up while standing around waiting for the awards- save that conversation for the ride home. Talking continually about how you "should have" won is a slight to the the winning team. Never take a loss personal. Be a pro. Even if you are not, it's nice when everyone acts that way, and save your whining for the car ride!

I will PM the mod team my address for my complimentary toaster oven in honor of post 1-0-0-0

Last year at the KW Memorial Tournament, I fished it with my boss who insisted on taking his boat. First spot in the morning he puts his trolling motor down and the battery was dead. Really??? I tried to forget about it and just fish and I was fine just making drifts but c'mon man. Afterwards, we were loading up the boat and I realized his boat registration was expired! WOW. Good thing no one noticed earlier or we would have been sitting at Lakeside all day. Pretty bad when the guy is 25 years older than me and should have the experience doing this stuff. LOL. Needless to say, I'll never partner with him again.

Things not to do during a tournament:

Fish over/through/around or cut off the guys who aren't in the tournament. Being in a tournament doens't give you special privileges. If you're a jerk like that under normal conditions there may be an even bigger problem.

The night before the start of a tournament never eat a King Steak Burrito loaded with hot peppers that your partner brought with from home to save money and have him wonder why the next day you have to make 50 runs to the nearest toilet and have him ask was that you screaming in there!!!

Pulling up to a spot with another boat fishing it but the spot is big enough for two or three boats. The boat fishing the spot pulls there trolling motor and drives over to u parks 20 yards in front and continues casting. Ill just follow write behind them a catch one seen it happen serves you write.

Always check your knots and leaders. Make sure you retie your stuff before the tourny starts and sharp hooks

Had that happen to me but they and we were bass fishing.  Going along and he rips in, stops in front of me on a nice bank, drops the motor and looks over at me and said, sorry, I'm in a tournament.  Really? I couldn't care less.

someone I know had caught a fish, cut hooks, registered it, and went back to fishing.... another fish on, then its gone. has another fish hit. its gone.
supposedly after cutting hooks youre supposed to put new ones on.
I believe that he won a dead-carp award in our club for that one. but we wont mention his name

heres something not to do to your partner that wins you a tourney. while partying
at lakeview tavern after hours, things are going great, drinks all around,
my "partner" decides to come up behind me and put a lit cig out on my neck!
the act itself didnt hurt, not that night anyway, but the next few weeks of a charred scab tearing everytime you turned your head was a bit painful.
needless to say he has one coming... Im really hoping its during this years tourney!!!

all jokes aside, dont go into a tourney thinkn youve got it in the bag.
6 fish landed us 6th place in the first best of best tourney.
dont give up on your patterns too quickly to shift gears to another either.
that weekend we fished B.O.B. my buddy, who was not in the tourney, also the guy who burned me in above story, hits the water at 10am, as were leaving our spot, he proceeds to pick up where we left off. well phonecall after phonecall told us that we messed up!
at the end of day 1, we had 1 fish registered, he had 9 in the boat between him and his girlfriend. He regrets not entering that tournament to this day
so of course, we go back to our pattern on sunday, run our usual course, boat 5, lose 3. oh how I kick myself for not sticking it out a bit longer on saturday!

last but not least, under no circumstances whatsoever, make fun of other participants for throwing the same bait all day long.
happened to a buddy with the same "brothers" a decade ago, and it happened to us a few years ago. we laughed as we watched these boys pitching the same baits side by side, every spot, all day long. well, end of the day we end up near them, fishing hard the last hour, I look over to watch dude set hooks hard,
45 incher comes flying out of the water with "famed bait" T-boned.
that was like getting a hot poker in your bingo dobber!

How about losing.g a tourneybwinning fish with two hours left to go and getting so distraught over it you basically don't care about the rest of the day. Shoulda stayed focused n kept fishing hard.
