Posts: 48 | My brother and I just finished a long afternoon/evening of musky fishing without even a follow. As I was driving home from the lake I was wondering what percentage of musky outings are unproductive. I realize alot of factors go into this calculation but as a general overall figure what would be a good, bad, average.....Skunk Rate? I know there are alot more talented musky anglers than me on this board. What is your 'Skunk Rate'?:-O

To me there is a huge difference between no fish in the boat with a lot of follows and just getting plain skunked, not even moving a fish. There are lots of days with no fish in the boat, but I dont have many where you dont at least have a late deep follow. Id say I come out empty 1 in 4. With a young family, I dont have much time for calling all the shots and picking up and going during prime times. Usually spur the moment outings for a few hours here and there if I find the time.

Posts: 39 | If I go with, well we might as well stay home and cast in the driveway, have about the same success. I don't have a boat so I have to wait til my buddies go, but it seems like the days I go with we may see a few fish but usually never any hook ups, then the next day they will go out with one of their other buddies and have 6 follows and hook up with 3 others, just the way it goes. If I/we move fish, I still consider the trip a success, for me half of the fun is just having the fish come in on the 8 and watch it chase the bait. I'm like everyone else and want to catch fish, but well let's be real here, you can't win 'em all.

Posts: 1460 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Everyone gets skunked....you have to enjoy the chase...even if you contact 0 fish, you likely have learned something you can use about the structure you fished on that day. I think its best not to pay attention to your numbers compared to other people's numbers....especially on an open forum...response set Makes it likely those with greater success will respond and those with less success will not. Again, you have to enjoy the chase as well as the catch....dont sweat the numbers, if you really need some help hire a guide...that is the best fishing investment youll make imo. Posts: 41 | It's not like walleye fishing where the common radio chatter is filled with comments like "not even 7:00 a.m. yet and we've got six in the box!" Even the best muskie guides get skunked, regularly. Now if you're getting skunked while bass fishing it might be time to rethink your game but while muskie fishing? not so much.

If I thought about this too much i'd quit fishing muskies. So many factors here like what lake are you fishing, time of year and the local weather. Regarding lakes some lakes don't have many fish in them and some are known for smaller fish but more numbers. I've had days where I'll catch 3 or 4 and days where you see nothing on the same lake. On some lakes in canada it's nothing to see 50 or more in one day with some hookups. I mostly fish the Chippewa flowage now and a great day is 3 fish but you can also have many days where they don't bite or you don't see them at all. But if they are moving the fish seem to be everywhere. Also I have seen that lake go from terrible in the late 70's to much better and this year it seems down. Normally this is because of baitfish supply which changes in every lake. A few years ago Mille Lacs was hot and all were awaiting the next world record and then the fishing took a big downturn. It happens to all the lakes so if you're fishing to catch them only try another species.
