| We have a Hamsby "light" keel guard on our 2004 Ranger. The keel guard failed (started peeling). We contacted our local Ranger dealer and they took it upon themseleves to order a new one at no cost (thank you MW Marine). While the new keel guard is free, the labor to remove the old one and install the new one it not. Here is my question...
Has anyone removed a keel guard before? I figure if I can remove it on my own, I can save hundreds in labor costs. MW Marine quoted $525 to remove the old and install the new.
My wife and I started removing our old keel guard this morning and got the actual keel guard off and with the help of a heat gun and plastic scrapper, we got the gray foam membrane off. The only thing left to get off is the remaining adhesive. We tried "Goof Off," but it didn't work real well.
So...does anyone know of a adhesive remover that will work well and of course, if safe for the fiberglass?

| I've had good luck removing gummy residue from stickers and labels with WD-40. The area would have to be cleaned well afterwards though, as you are putting another one on. Could "test" a small area to see the results on the glass, would think it would be fine.

| I just went through this. It wasn't fun.
Things to buy
Stiff, sharp putty knife (a week one will not work)
Green scracch pads (scratchless ones will not work)
goof-off (professsional strength in a liquid form- spray bottle did not work for me)
12 pack
I doused that last layer with the goof off with a saturated rag, let it sit for a minute, than start at it with the putty knife. a very cautious stroke worked best for me so i wouldn't damage the hull. I would remove a little than re-apply more goof off. i went back and forth between the putty knife and the green scratch pad. If you are not concerned about your hull, you could probably get away without the scratch pad. good luck |

| Thank you for the response and input! I called Hamby's this morning and spoke with a nice gentlemen. He suggested "any ol' cleaner," but than more specifically mentioned trying a brake cleaner and/or acetone.
I will give these a shot tonight, hope I don't ruin anything...

I spent a few hours in the garage late last night and got almost all of the adhesive off. The trick...
Acetone and patience
I don't wish that project on anyone!
I dropped the boat off this morning and the service tech mentioned that I probably saved about $300. Worth it, I guess.

| For anybody else that runs into this.
If you have access to any type of drill use a drill and a pin stripe removing wheel.
If you get the bulk of the extra rubber membrane off before starting it will help. But just take the pin stripe removing disk (its like a big eraser wheel) and use that in the drill and it will remove whats left of the membrane and also any adhessive that is left. It takes a little time but is much easier than elbow grease. It also will not damage the fiberglass or the gel coat at all.
I would strongly suggest that if your going to get a keel gaurd to install the hard rubber one that epoxy's on as that one has much better protection and will not come off like the cheaper rubber one. |
