I am looking for a little help.

1.) My on-bank charger shows that there is a connection error for bank #2 on my charger. Bank one is working properly. Is this common? I have checked my connections and fuses and they all seem to be fine. I recently put in new batteries, but I believe all my connections are correct.

2.) My Minnkota Maxxum trolling motor does not lock into place when I lower it into the water. I need to manually push the pin under the latch on the mount so that it hold in place. I also need to do the same to get it to manually release.

I live in Watertown, MN. Does anyone know of places in the area I can have these things looked at or serviced other than motor clinic in Bloomington? I have heard that the on board charger may need to go to Minnkota directly as they can't be worked on.

Thanks for any advice or help!

Hiya,

First off, the TM you can fix on your own... you will need a couple of retaining clips that you can get at a hardware store. If memory serves me correctly, take off the right-side plate as you look at the TM from in the boat. you will notice a spring that should hopefully be hanging there. if you reattach that spring, and get the retainer clip back on it, you will be good to go.

As for the battery charger, I would suggest first trying to swap the leads from one battery to the other and see if the problem persists. If the same bank on the charger shows connection error while on the other battery, my gut instinct would be that the charger bank is the problem.

Fish Lectronics is great at fixing Minnkotas. I believe it is in Fridley though.

I had an older charger from MinnKota and after several years of troublefree loyal service I had similar problems with connection errors, etc only to be followed by smoke and electrical burning smell.
The unit was toast. I replaced it with a newer model. The previous model had some design issues and they dramatically changed it for what you see in stores now.

Had the same issue with on MK on-board last fall. Turned out to be a shorted wire to the bank in question. New one put in and no issues. My wonderful dealer replaced the battery boxes in my alumacraft when they broke free because of the aluminum being too thing and they squeezed the cord to that bank into a space that shrunk in size with thicker gauge aluminum. By Labour Day weekend last season, it had worn through and shorted out the one side.

I was surprised that it went bad after 5 years with all the old old old chargers I see come up here and work like a charm. It was almost a relief to find out it had help getting toasted.
