I know this may not come off as a suggestion but I know that all the HDS units automatically update themselves as soon as the chip is put into them. Maybe try putting the update onto a another card, it may not have fully downloaded onto the SD card that you originally put it on??

Once you download the to your computer, you need to double click on the download and go through the setup process before you actually have the update. So once you have the download on your card, double click on it, it'll take you through some setup menus. Follow those and you should be ready to put it in the HDS then.

I ran into the same problem. I was told that the size of the card can impact this and to try and find a 512kb card (not easy to do). I have not tried it yet, but have it loaded on a 512 card. Hoping to have time to do it tomorrow, will let you know how it goes.

I've always done my updates on a 1, 2 or 8 gig card, any of those will work just fine. Make sure the card is cleared off and formatted. They suggest a card 512 and larger, but it's not a must to use a 512. Finding a 512 card these days is rare.

Double clicked on the update and tried that figured that was the problem and still the application reads 3.0.33.84. I did another 3.0 update figuring i never got that one the first go around then installed the 4.0 nothing there I'm gonna clear the card start fresh again.

ran the 3.0 put out in 9/10 that I did'nt have and it successfully upgraded the unit. Followed same process albeit the download for the 3.0 never went to my downloads page like the 4.0 does. In my downloads page I cant double click to run the install shield wizard. So I find it through the documents page then downloads where I double clicked and ran the install shield wizard (exracting, decompressing, copy etc. etc.) I hit finish and it tells me it has successfully downloaded to my sd card only when I check it it still empty so I right click the 4.0 and send to my card reader and it successfully moves it to the card. I even then once its on the card have tried double clicking to run the install shield wizard and loaded it into my unit and no upgrade. Am I wrong but the 3.0 9/10 downloads differently then the 4.0? I never left the Lowrance site to transfer to my card and first try in the unit it instantly upgraded the unit.

If I recall correctly, I downloaded the .exe file directly to my desktop, and when I ran the file, directed it to my SD card. Took about 20 minutes to run the file and install the update on the SD card. FWIW - I used a 1gb card with no problems

My guess is that you are having an issue with one of the following:

1)Your SD card or card reader is not working properly. This is easy to trouble shoot - just load a random file (like a word document or picture or something) onto 2 separate cards and see if you can open the file on another computer. If 1 card works and not the other, you have a faulty card. If neither card allows you to open the file, then the card reader itself is probably at fault.

2) If the card and reader are ok, then there is a chance that the .exe file is corrupt or did not download properly. Try deleting and downloading again before you run the file.

Maybe this will help - hope so.

T.J. was right on the money for me and he was correct with the fact that is didnt matter what size card. I downloaded directly onto a 4 gig card, then double clicked on the card and ran the install program. When you run it, the system might default you back to your C drive, make sure you navigate back to the SD card and set that as the location.

I did this today and installed on both my units in around 2-3 minutes each.

Glad to hear you got things worked out. The update is very easy and painless if you know what your doing. The 4.0 update is nice, love the preset screen buttons. Stay tuned for another update coming, I've been told it's going to be a good one.

TJ -- any idea when the new update may be coming? I have updated one of my units to 4.0, but might just hold off updating the other until the new update is out and do both at the same time.

From my understanding, it won't be available until September. However, these releases can be delayed. I would suggest, for the little time it takes to do an update, do the 4.0 update, it won't hurt you, it'll only get the best performance out of your unit.

Since the unit defaults back to General Fishing mode when you do the update, this mode being mainly for saltwater use, make sure once you've done 4.0 update you go into Menu, Sonar Features and change it to Shallow Water mode. This is a must, otherwise you'll have problems with depth readings.

Thanks TJ. I will just go ahead and do the 4.0 on the other unit then. I noticed the comments about fishing mode earlier so I do remember having the change that once the upgrade is done, but its always good for a reminder. Dang binge drinking.

I updated mine, but still no temp reading? I know that my transducer has temp, because I used it with my x-17.

Any suggestions? The post about this earlier did not solve my prob.

Also- how the heck do you get time to be continuously displayed?

Any help would be reall appreciated.

do you have it displayed on your page? You have to add both to "Overlay Data" in order for them to show up.
