Location: north central wisconsin | I was just wondering what the other night guys are running since this discussion took place a couple years ago. Still running my Princeton Tec 3 LED but am finally in the market for a new light and want something with a brighter option. I would like to know what you feel is the best all around headlamp for ease of use(don't need to cycle through multiple settings to get to the light you desire), brightness, battery life etc.
I've been looking at the Petzl MYO RXP(my friend has the XP and loves it), though am not sure about the programable portion of the light. I also see some of the lights are now rechargeable but not certain that would be for me on an island camping trip for several nights with no charging power.
I'm not interested in any of the simple 3-4 led light models, as I already have several of them, but am looking for more of a tactical unit capable of offering the light of the typical 3 led, but also affording a good beam when fighting fish or looking for the landing or marker cans.

my other headlamp is a princeton tec quad..very nice as well
i've done the headlamps w the packs in back..prefer everything up front, the browning and princ. tec are super light.... the Browning has 125 or so lumens which I have found to be one of the brightest for the size/weight/battery it requires |

Location: Racine, Wi | I don't recall the brand, but Cory had a nice headlamp that had a bunch of different features such as intensity variation and a few other things. Hopefully he'll post what it is as I definitely need to upgrade my headlamps soon. |

Not really. Best I have used was a Musky Armor headlamp. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | I like the Petzl, I just got a new one with a flip down red LED cover. The one I had before, I had to cycle through the settings to get to the red setting. It's pretty sweet. |

I did take Brads advice on that Browning and got one of those comin but need another one as well. I think he knows a thing or 2 about night fishing and diggin that BBQ sauce out of tight places!  |

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | J not sure how basic headlamp manufacturers are anymore. I own a Black Diamond headlamp that is about 10 years old, and the thing is awesome. Unfortunately they don’t make that model anymore as it only has spot, and ambient settings. So no scrolling through various options. Very light on the head and comfortable. Mine has the center strap over the top, and then around the sides.
At a minimum check out their site to see what they have. The lights can take a beating as well. A great feature is have the tiny little battery indicator on the side of them that tells you where the battery life is at. It flashes every so often…at least on mine. Great if you are trying to find your headlamp in the dark. They are made for rock/mountain climbing.

check the lumen rating when buying one..the browning I bought is 125 I think..most are in the 30-60 range...over 100 means super azz bright |

I'm in market for two headlamps. Mine seem to inexpicably walk away from my boat. I like the specs on the Browning, except for the 12hr. max run time. Do you find you're replacing the battery alot? The run time on the Black Diamonds is much higher, but the light isn't quite as bright (naturally, a trade-off).
What's been your experience w/ re. to battery usage in real life??

Location: Contrarian Island | 12 hours is the max run time on the brightest setting (it has 2 settings w the white light)
12 hours is a lonnnnggg time when really I only turn it on when fighting a fish and then you can turn it on the lower setting if you want for unhooking...so 12 hours is 720 minutes...that's a longggg time ...I would imagine it lasts most anglers even ones that are on the water a lot at night like me minimum 1 season, most guys probably 2 or 3 seasons and the battery in it isn't expensive..... |

Location: Columbus, Georgia | I don't know. A headlamp strong enough to find the dock when returning to the launch? I carry a 3M candlepower spotlight to accomplish that task.
You'd have to be right on top of the dock before you'd be able to see it with a headlamp. I would run aground for sure. |
