Never owned one, but I have used a friend's. His is about 8 years old (and he beats the snot out of it) and still fishes like a top end reel.

Shouldn't you have asked these questions prior to plopping down this kinda cash? =) Hahaha...

Needless to say, judging from what everyone else says about them - I'm sure you'll love it.
Never personally used one myself 'cuz I prefer the lower profile of my Revo Toros...

PSYS, what did you use before the Toro's? They are only a couple years old.

stcroixallday,

When you purchase a new TE: Make a copy of the receipt and send the reel directly to Shimano in California when it needs servicing (after each season's use). Send the reel in the original box with the receipt the first time around. The reel has a warranty for the first year. Thereafter, I just send the reels in their original box. They have a form you can print off of the web site designating the service you wish. Include it in the reel box.

Shimano has a policy of servicing a TE and getting it back to you within 72 hours. It's a great service. So I ask for a full cleaning and ask them to replace anything that they deem necessary. They have replaced some springs a few times and have never charged extra. Never needed any gear work. I have sent the reels in with and without line on the spool. They say it makes no difference.

If you visit Shimano.com you can follow the links for freshwater fishing, then USA. I believe they have a toll-free number.

The cost to have each reel serviced is $30. It's really a premium service. There's another thread posted today where a guy took his TE apart (himself) and now it's not working properly.

I would never, ever take one of my reels apart. I know myself too well. It would never work again ...

I think the 400TE is the best all around reel you can buy, and the 400B is the best all around reel if you can't afford the TE. I have a few TE's for various applications, and a couple even set up for specific baits and times. So they are great reels.

As for service, I've had mine serviced at Shimano and it works well. I'd advise though to no count on the 72 hr service from Shimano for the TE's. I've sent several back and they ALL come back about 2-3 weeks; TE, B's, whatever. Not saying the 72 hr deal doesn't exist, but so far I've not enjoyed it.

Now I use Dave's Reel Service to take care of my reels. Costs a bit more, but I just like what he has to offer in the way of upgrades and the ability to talk to HIM and know what you're getting and getting done.

Enjoy your TE!

Shimano ConQuest, Shimano CalCutta LJV, Shimano CalCutta TE. Best Round Reels. I can Clean and relube any Calcutta U have and can do upgrades on them, I can replace the bushing on the spool and replace it with a ABEC7 Bearing, that will keep the spool from flexing on hooksets, I like to replace the stock drag washers for Carbontex washers, you will gain a little on top end and the drag will be butter smooth, no jerking of line going out on drag, and I polish some of contact points to smooth out the reel, PM me for details

I just had my TE serviced by Pikemaster with some upgrades to boot. He got the reel back to me in 3 days. Great to work with and excellent price. I will be using him again when I need a reel worked on.

I couldn't be happier with my TE, just wish i had enough money to buy 10 of them.

I use Abu Garcia's 6500...ONLY FOR MY SUCKER RODS! All casting rods get a Calcutta 400TE, 400B or I even have one old 400 that works excellent. I have clients use and abuse these reels and they work flawlessly day after day. You will not be disappointed!!! Who knows I might even sell the garcia sucker reels and put 400B's on those as well. I could make someone a great deal on some garcias if they are interested.lol

Just picked up a used 400te with a power handle. Omg this thing is so much easier for everything. Had a 6500 c4 that was my all around reel and I was pulling spinners and bucktails and they were a workout. This thing is a breeze, kicking myself I didn't get one sooner!

I have owned two im my life and they are real nice reels that are built well. They are nice reels but i think Daiwa makes a better reel when it comes down to it. I really like daiwa just a little more but they both are at the top of the list as far as quality the te has gone up in the past few years in price but its still a very nice reel that your going to love to death. Their are better versions of the Calcutta above the TE level though the DC is very nice

I had 400 TEs. I switched to the Conquest 300 and like 'em better. Lighter, slightly smaller but same drag force. Had to get it on eBay as they are not sold in the U.S. I also spoke with a website out of Japan that sells Japanese tackle and they still felt that the Shimano TE line in general was best and still perhaps tops the Pluton.

Calcutta 400 TE LJV hands down! Just change the handle to a power crank.
