Looking at my BPS catalog.......the Winch, Toro 60 and Toro HS pick up 22", 26" and 31" respectively. For what its worth.

This news is perplexing. Gotta be one of the most popular reels out there now. Unless they're INCREDIBLY labor intensive to make, they've gotta be making a nice profit at $280 a pop.

I know that Shimano is redoing the Chronarch, here is a pic of new reel. They are also redoing the Curado E series, and the new 500 ???????????
Not sure if I can make ICAST this year, but will post what I hear from my source at Shimano.

We will be at ICAST, just ask in the ICAST thread what you need to find out and we'll go get an interview.

It makes no sense to me at all. I think the 5.4:1 gear ratio coupled with the line retrieve per crank was a good middle-point for most baits. I could see eliminating either the Winch or the HS since they're really focused to ONE particular type of retrieve, bait type, etc, etc. Nonetheless, I'm disappointed.

thats the name of the game these days you know. They will sell more equipment with products focused on one particular technique, leading people to believe that you need 20 different rod/reel combos before you even dare step on the water, im exaggerating ofcourse, but you get my point.

Actually, when you put it like that Jake - it makes perfect sense.  Didn't even think of it in those terms.  I'm forgetting about the money-hungry, greedy, business sense of the industry.

Where is the iCast thread?  I'd be interested in finding out more about Shimano's "Revo Toro killer" i.e., Shimano 500... supposedly, that's been the buzz on a couple of other forums.

Imagine that, a business trying to make money. Much better to lose money, and go out of business.

The fishing tackle business overall has been in the tank for several years in a way never seen before, and is just this year showing clear signs of recovery, much less coming even close to pre-recession sales.

The reel has been out long enough for Pure Fishing to make a decision on keeping it in the line or discontinuing it based upon cost/sales figures. The Muskie market is not going to make...or break... a Pure Fishing product's success unless targeted specifically at it. Removing a successful product to drive sales of a less successful product isn't likely to be the situation.

TJ works with Pure Fishing quite a bit, I'll see if he can get some sort of statement.

The winch is a great reel but in my mind it does not substitute for quicker pickup needed for ripping twitch baits. I might be OK with the high speed gear but will hopefully have the regular Revo Toro long enough to replace a few gear sets (which will hopefully remain available). So far a year running on the Revo Toro with nothing so much as a levelwind pawl replaced. It is by far a more durable reel than the C3 or Record.

Not sure I recall anyone making that kind of comment, Steve...?

I believe based on the state of our country's current economy (or lack thereof), the same could [probably] be said of most industries. Nonetheless, I'd be interested in seeing the data you have showing the progression of the fishing industry into its downward spiral you've reference above. How much data do you have and how far does it go back? Is this a nationwide report for all of the U.S. or are we talking about a niche market like one state in particular?

I think Steve was referring to my comment, as well as PSYS's input on my comment. I was simply stating that from a business standpoint, they would generate more business and in turn, profit, from this new phenomenon that fisherman(espcecially musky fishermen) need a rod/reel combination for every technique. I'm not bashing them for trying to make money, I was just stating what comes to my mind when I heard they were discontinuing this " in the middle" or "universal" reel.

I was responding to this: 'I'm forgetting about the money-hungry, greedy, business sense of the industry.'

PSYS,
I work in the fishing industry and have for over 35 years. Currently, OFM works directly with a couple dozen marine and fishing tackle related companies, two professional organizations, and works within and covers the competitive angling world of Bass and Walleye. Right now, Zach, Carlos, TJ, and I are at an Anglers Insight marketing event. We shoot interviews, operate the web property, shoot the images, write the reports and during-the-event releases, operate the live leaderboard while working in concert with Sour Squirrel Studios...we make the event available to the general public through a multi-camera wirecast and on the web at http://www.aimfishing.com

The final day the top 5 are set up with GPS units, and fans can track their favorite Pro during the day on a very unique Navionics Overlay map live, and watch video reports from in each rig up to the live weigh in.

I'll be at a Midwest Walleye Series event Sunday on Winnebago, (stop by and check out the weigh in), making the run after closing up the trailer with the final AIM press release Saturay night from Brimley, Michigan. TJ leaves next week Wednesday to the next BASS Elite after buttoning up the AIM trailer and getting it back to storage. Thomas Allen covers the FLW for OFM, and will be onsite at Leech Lake for the next FLW Walleye Tour event.

We see the industry from several viewpoints from the corporate boardroom to the competitive angler's rig.

We'll be attending three saltwater events this year as well, and believe it or not, will be covering the International Carp championships this year in New York.

It's a big fishing world out there.

We attend ICAST every year working with our clients and covering the show, so watch for that thread during the show; we shoot multiple interviews a day covering new introductions, emerging news at ICAST, etc.

Overall, the fishing tackle industry fell on harder times about the time 9/11 happened; but the 90's were incredible...it was a very hard fall. A slow recovery was blasted out of existence when the current recession hit. Budgets are tight, staffs have been cut, and the industry as a whole has suffered world wide. There's a light at the end of a tunnel now, and it's looking very much like it isn't a train, which is good.

The short answer from Pure Fishing today was simple:
That model reel wasn't selling well. The two still being built are.

The strongest freshwater growth segment by percentage in the US has been Muskies, but overall sales when taken as a segment are still small compared to salt and other freshwater species targeted tackle. What we see as reality contained within the world of muskies may not match up with the realities a company like Pure Fishing has to live within.

The marine business has been very tough. Boat sales last year were at levels not seen since the 60's. Factories have closed, layoffs were the rule, and that's JUST begun to turn around this year...thank goodness.

Steve:

I appreciate the thorough reply. I'll do a search for the event on Winnebago this Sunday and see if I can make it down there. Not sure what I've got going on this Sunday. Whereabouts are you gonna be set up on Winnebago?

Thanks again,

- Scott.

From what I'm hearing Shimano is shifting alot of the reel production over from Japan to Malaysia, I hope the new 500 reel will not be made in Malaysia ?????? I wonder if Shimano will drop the 300 Curado E ?????? The Chronarch and the Curado will share the same frame, then I bet Shimano will drop the Curado 300E size reel for the new 500 size reel. We all will have to wait for ICAST.
Shimano is trying to keep a lower price but I hope the QUALITY don't go out the window.

I heard all 20 series curados are are sale now because the newest model will be coming out shortly and made in malaysia...sadly the 300 and 50's will probably follow in that direction. I would like to see a 300 series chronarch with 5.1 gears but I doubt we will ever see such an animal.
