I am going to be in the Park Rapids area for musky opener. I have fished most of the lakes up in that area (Plantagenette, Mantrap, Elk, Cass, Bemidji, Big, etc.) except Leech.

I think it would make the most sense to stick to the smaller lakes for the warmer water temps because we have had a such a cold spring ???

What do you guys think about fishing the bigger lakes like Cass, Leech or Bemidji on opener?

Thanks - Midge

It's not "which lake" you fish but how you fish. You can catch muskies on any of those lakes for season opener. You may want to look at less traditional tactics and spots however.

I predict a good open water bite to start the season off this year with the lack of weedgrowth. I know I will be fishing the abyss somewhere in MN.

Good Luck!

I agree with Brett. my PB was on opener from leech, it was a cold spring like this and i was trolling off the edge of a drop in a 28-30 foot hole when my rod loaded up. watch the water temps. if they have been mid fifties for a week or two there will be plenty of post spawn fish using shallow weeds near that lakes spawning areas. i would guess that would be the case more on the smaller lakes up there though. if you decide to play on the big water start shallow for a bit if you dont move or see any for awhile move deep and aim for the suspended fish. its a style of fishing that people overlook more then they should. its not rare when fishing pre spawned suspended fish to stick a pig. good luck!

Water temps on Leech today are in the low 60's. They were warmer earlier in the week but we have experienced a cold front and low night temps in the upper 30's.

Fishing in the Park Rapids area has been real tough. Winds out of the east, cold fronts, rain, and wind. At least while fishing for walleye. I have to do somethng until the Muskie opener.. LOL. Heading back up tomorrow. Looks like the same story for weather. I'll head to the 'Logging Camp' for breakfast Saturday and fish a little later. Some of you know what I'm talking about. Anyway ... Have a great holiday weekend.

I'll probably be on Tonka for opener. Looks like a good year to down-size and fish cabbage wherever one can find it. Topwaters might be a good option if we get a little warm spell. The LowRiders might see action too.

Tonka is always fun before the pleasure boaters get out. Later in the summer you have to be off the water by 10:00 am. That's when you might see everything but the Queen Mary out there.

That place is awesome! Never ending food supply. Mantrap can be tough early in the season.
