Snap weight release's on offshore board's, point rod tip at board to prevent diving while bringing in board till you unhook them. Church boards also work well, faster speeds with warming temps, will require big boards.

Posts: 572 | Since I just bought a couple of Off Shore planer boards late last year and haven't used them, your topic sounded interesting. Therefore, I did a search on planer boards. I thought I might want the planer boards to pop off. However, the following showed the hook up rate may be a lot better when the boards do NOT pop off. It sounded good to me. http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=38... board&highlightmode=1#M29174 the following is a quote............ "A couple of other things to consider here. You will want to pick a board with a very good release system if you are using "super braids". They tend to slip through or out of many of the conventional "pinch down" rubber releases. Also, your hooking percentage, and thus your boating percentage, will increase substantually if you use a board that DOES NOT pop off at the hit or during the fight. When I used to use boards that popped I hooked about 50-60% of the hits I got. When I went to a board that does not pop the rate goes to 85-90%, quite a difference! As to length out from the boat, remember that if that board does not pop, that board has to be worked (with fish on line) back to the boat - don't get them out any further then you have to to get the spread between your baits that you want. Most guys that I see run their inside set too far out from the boat and thus their second set gets WAY outside. Keep the first set in tight, they still catch plenty of fish." I guess there are a lot of other things to consider like rod level, reel drag setting, dull hooks, etc. When I start using the planer boards, I think I will keep the rod level fairly low.

Posts: 272 | I used the red Off Shore clamps for a number of years. They're the ones with the little "tit" in the pinch pad, designed to keep your line from pulling free from the pad. I used a red up front and a black in the back. Sometimes red front and back. They mostly work for that purpose. Better than the ones w/o the tit, button, peg....whatever you wanna call it. However, enough of a percentage of fish would zip the line right over that peg and the board would pop off and be free floating anyway. That, and no matter what, eventually braid or mono rubs a groove in that peg. This groove gets sharp, and will eventually start raising hell with your line. I started using the Orange pads. Not sure what the model number is, but I think they have either the same or very similar spring tension to the reds. I edited the back pad and put a large snap swivel in its place. Now, I get a good hookset, sometimes the board pops off shortly after, otherwise usually the fish will bury the board anyhow and it will pull free......and it just slides back to the bead I have in front of the knot at my 4' leader and viola.....net the fish and don't need to go chasing down the board. Kinda like what the Church system does.

Posts: 155 | Good info.If you use the red snaps you might want to move the spring inside the snap to the other side to make it easier to pinch.
