| I pulled into Horseshoe lodge today to fuel up, while I was sitting there I noticed a dead 40" class fish floating. Looked fairly fresh. Might of been a tournament fish.
[:((] |

| Or, maybe it wasn't a tourney fish. Could it possibly have been mishandled by someone who's new to muskies??? Guess we'll never know, he is't talking.
Would it be any less dead if some panfisherman hooked it on a crawler and took it home for a meal???? |

| Or..... it was a tournament fish.
The simple most obvious answer is usually the true one.
MUSKY ILLINI
"Slap...I challunge you to a duel"[] |
| |
| OR...the fish maybe DROWNED???!!![:0] |
| |
| If it had been here in Maryland, it may have run out of water. |

| We need to do everything we can to get these fish back in the water unharmed but when it comes right down to it we need to relax because after all they are just a fish. We all know that even some of our best releases result in dead fish on occasion, yes even your releases. Just because they swam away from your boat doesn't mean they are swimming the next day.
Release education is the key but like I said before even the best releases can sometimes go awry. The only way to completely protect the fish is by leaving them alone and not fishing for them, and I for one do not want to go there.

| The more I think about this, the more I wonder if the fish was REALLY dead...the wife has been known to lay completely motionless on the beach or various pieces of furniture in the house w/out any sign of life for long periods of time, yet when I come back later I find out she has moved to another location, and STILL appears to be lifeless. Funny thing is she never does this unless we are alone...perhaps the fish, much like an opposum, locked up when you showed up! There must be some relationship between the 3 creatures.....[:0] |

| Why jump to conclussions right away. Are you trying to stir the pot? I dont recall any fish being caught in that area. And you use the word "torchered" as if a tourny fish is released differantly than a fish caught while just out fishing. Find a better soapbox get get on. |

| |
| Thanks 99, I couldn't have put it better myself. |
| |
| Well at least we know it wasn't me!
That fish could have died from the 20+ non tourney boats as well. Fish die.....someone makes more. |
| |
| I think we should stop all this fishing silliness, as it is can obviously sometimes be unhealthy for the fish. I think we should leave the lakes alone, period. Let's just put a few "rescue" fish in goverment-funded aquariums where our communities' children can learn to respect them in a natural-appearing habitat.[:knockout:]
Life sucks, the fish died, we don't know why. If it had an ice pick through the head, then get pissed/bummed, but the bottom line is sh!t happens. It doesn't smell good, but it still happens.
BTW, yes I was joking in the first paragraph, but sometime's it not THAT far a stretch from people's viewpoints. No offense, but a dead muskie is a "That sucks. What's on TV?" subject. |
| |
| Wow !!!
Can a fish die of natural causes nowadays? Or only die because of a tournament fisherman mishandled it.
Remember, it's the chance you take fishing for them. They might die.
Bottom line ... it's only a fish !!!

| Kevin, I fish the PMTT and I can guarantee any fish caught during that tournament was handled as best and as safely as any human could handle a fish. They stay in the net the whole time till judge boat comes to measure the fish.Maybe 10 seconds out of the water. Good Luck Bud.[:praise:] |

| Thanks 99,
When I replied to this this morning that's what I was getting at. I guess the work tortured was what got me going too. How you put it was better than I did.

| Right, let me taken that word out. I don't want anyone to think I am from that PETA group or something. |
| |
| That was not a dead fish, it was sponge Bob taking a siesta!
He was wearing his muskie head hat.
[] |
| |
| I have seen upside down catfish in the pet store, could there be an upside down musky?
I see dead musky every year, most I am sure are due to mishandling. I see dead bass for the same reason. I don't like to see it either. We just have to keep educating and hope to chip away to make things better. Besides the musky communtiy has far bigger problems than tournament controversies, percieved or otherwise. We should concentrate on spearing, no more muskies, length limits and expending the muskies range. |
