So I've been doing a lot of reading and a lot of watching television programs/movies and come to the realization that down sizing and speed can be a very effective presentation tactic at certain times of the year be it early season or heavily pressured lakes. My question to everyone is, do you also down size your leader say from a 130 lb fluorocarbon leader to say a 80 or 100 lb leader. Also with that do you use a smaller braided line like 50 lb. I realize the smaller baits would be more affected by the larger leader and bigger diameter line but do you run the risk of breaking line and leaders by down sizing. To me it seems like half a dozen to one, 6 to the other.

Thanks,
Matt Percival

I personally wouldn't downsize floro leaders, as the fish have a better chance to inhale the bait, and I don't trust 80lb floro against those odds. I think some lighter seven strand would be a good alternative, and I would downsize my main line to 40 to 60, that'll improve your casting distance without too great of a risk of break offs.

I downsize my line to 40lb and use 80lb fluorocarbon leaders. I haven't been biten off yet, but I'm going to up my minimum to 100lb in the near future. If you're using smaller and lighter lures, 130lb fluoro hurts the action, in my opinion. However, that might be mostly attributed to the snap and/or swivel.

Here's my theory on 80lb fluoro:

Downsize what bait?

It really depends on what you are talking about. Some bucktails you don't need to downsize your equipment, but if you start using like Rapala minnow baits, then those heavy lines and leaders will effect the action of those and you are better off downsizing the line & leaders. So ask yourself, is the bait doing what I want it to do? Or will work better with lighter terminal tackle?

The worst scenario is leaving the lure in the fishes face. don't cut corners on terminal tackle at all and lots less pressure for sure

But I think he also uses a 6" or 7" wire leader between the fluoro and bait. I guessing that is to help prevent bite offs.

I would probably shy away from just using 80lb fluoro leader.

I use quite a few small lures including Creatures, and find that 30# sevenstrand is almost indestructible. 60 is a bit too stiff, and I've never had a 30# sevenstrand leader break off on a fish.
