| How big is the size difference between these two reels?
Could someone please post a picture of the two next to eachother? |

| if you are thinking of getting one of these reels, just get the Calcutta 401 TE. the Luna 300 is not in the class as the Calcutta. they are almostly exactly the same size. the 401 TE, in my opinion, is far superior (i have both) |

| apples to oranges here. the luna and te are completely different reels. teh luna 300 is comparable to the calcutta 400b the te is an entirely different animal. |

I agree. And I do own a Luna and a 400b. I prefer the 400b. |

| If you want something fancy, def. go with the TE. However, I've seen TE's break, have broken every Calcutta I have owned and the only time I ever used a Luna for a full day, the anti reverse went out on a fish boatside during a tournament. Penn makes a great reel and I would choose that over the Luna. I have never owned a TE, but the Penn International series are tough reels and the one I owned lasted over two years of throwing pounders and double 10's here and there. I'm going back to using the Abu Garcia C3's and other "low end" Garcia's. Tough reels and if you take care of them (you have to a little more than the other reels) they will last you just as long. If one breaks or it decides to make that insane screaming noise they are known for, for the price of a TE, you can buy a few more of these reels new or used and always have a backup. Just an idea... I know a lot of guys have given the C3's its final chance years ago. I still have a working C4 (the first musky reel I ever bought) sitting on my desk right now. It's been used, abused, broken and repaired a few times and has a new handle, but I bought it 11 years ago for like 60 bucks and I can still use the thing and probably outcast a Luna or Calcutta with it too. |

Concerning Luna vs. TE, I would ask you what you plan to do with it. If it's straight cast and retreive go with the Luna. They're a little less money and the handle is more comfortable. If you're going to be ripping things and/or using it for jerks get the TE and don't look back. If you want one for everything go for the TE. |

| both good reels (have used both). The TE is more expensive and built better. But i use a number of AC300's (St Croix Luna) and they are nice smooth reels that have held up well for me. I fish every weekend and have NEVER blown out a reel. I would say that if you are going to get a luna buy the SC instead as they are $20 cheaper, basically the same reel and they will service it in Wisc. Another option is the Calcutta 400b at the same price. Another stellar reel. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | The LUNA 300 is a tank of a reel. The 300 has 6 drag washers, the 400TE only has 3. Guys that blow out the A/R Bearing don't thumb the spool when they rip & jerk. For the $$$$ the Luna can't be beat. Also ck out the LUNA 253, GREAT reel for 65/80lb braid for casting. Jim Saric only uses a ST CROIX 250 reel ( same as a LUNA 253 )for all lures that he casts. |

Location: Bemidji, MN | I have two Luna 300s and they have held up for 2 seasons now, but I do not fish 4-5x a week 8-15hr days so it makes a big difference. I have been pleased with my Lunas, they are super smooth and handles are comfortable. I've tried the calcutta 400 b and prefer my Daiwa's- maybe cause I'm used to them. Last summer I used mostly gliders/jerkbaits and don't thumb the spool, I might as well start doing that. Lots of stories of anti-reverse blown out. I look forward trying out a 400 te and will be a great reel. |

| If your left handed, i'd go with the luna 300. I've had so many problems with the 401 handles falling off. I'd be fishing, and then all of a sudden, my handle would be on the boat floor. Pretty pathetic. Send them into Shimano several of times, and they have no awnser for me. 2 of my reels have been at Shimano since december. 401 love to rip out threads..
So after I found my half of my reel on my boat last year, i switched to 300 Luna. I've never once had a problem with my Luna. I also throw Pounders 80 % of the time, with no issue at all. The only problem you'll ever have with your Luna is the anti-reverse will go out. Easily fixable in the boat in 3 minutes.
If your a lefty and your looking for a reel to throw blades. I'd highly reccomend a (Avet) Picked up 2 last year. Best real on the market for throwing 13's and double 10's. picking up about 42-43 inches per crank. Closest thing you'll find to a trinidad for us leftys.. |
