Seen on the news last night that Eagle Lake in Maple grove experienced some winterkill.  They did show a bunch of panfish floating in the water, but I am wondering if anybody knows of any muskies that didn't make it.  Anybody on this site live on that lake? I live in Fridley and hit Eagle a few times a year.  Haven't had any luck there but if some muskies didn't make it, I may stay away for a couple of years to let the lake recover. Do you think that the winterkill was significant enough to effect the fishery?

I've fished it in the winter and had people ask for a gaff to get the muskie they had hooked into. I've heard of several others that were kept during the winter too. There are still some nice fish in there but it gets hammered all year long. Hopefully there weren't too many that died during the winterkill.

I used to fish this lake 4-5 days a week when I first started muskie fishing. It used to be a great lake to fish. I feel pressure has taken it's toll out on this small lake, I have seen floaters out there every year in the summer. Hopefully the muskies made in through the winter.

Are you certain you are talking about Eagle lake in MN that may or may not contain muskies, or Bald Eagle lake in MN which certainly does?

my parents live on eagle and there were a quite a few floaters this year at ice out, i counted 5, more than i have ever seen(at ice out). i think that it was due to the large number of tip ups this last winter and the much larger number of really poor, incompetent fishermen that this lake draws throughout the year. last summer I saw at least 7 dead muskys including two over 50. one was 53.75, it died because it's gill plate was compleatly ripped off on one side and it had a two foot long mark on the other side from it sitting on boat carpet. i'm sure that the fisherman(men) who boated it still got pictures though. it's sad because i have caught that fish at least 3 times in the last 5 years, but no more. the number of dead ones has gone up alot in the last 5+ years, i think it is because of the attention that it got from the tournament. now i only fish out there when i can't go to tonka, mostly because the new people out there are really rude and will not think twice about cutting you off.

This applies not only to Eagle lake but all of our lakes. You can not stress enough the importance of proper handling and releasing of fish. Always make it a point to educate the next person.

I spotted one also last weekend! I wonder why this lake was effected more than others? It has plenty of depth.

Could it be these fish died from being caught during the ice fishing season. I know there are lots of guys tip up fishing out there in the winter time.

some times even a lake that has enough depth sometimes does not have the adequate vegetation and maybe improper ph levels and such and on the right circumstances or should I say wrong circumstances in winter they'll freeze out! something to think about anyway, I know a lake here that was phenominal for quite a few yrs and it froze out for reasons we cant quite figure out!
