I have never had a AVET apart ??? I use a Trinidad 16NA
The Curado is OK I like the TORO reels better.

I think there was a post on them a month or so back and someone said they sounded like a coffee grinder ??? with S. STEEL gears it will not be smooth.
Like I said I never had one apart.

Shimano is coming out with a 500 size reel, it will not be called a Curado, and it is SLV / GRAY in color, it should be out maybe this year at ICAST or next year, it should go head to head with the TORO.

From an engineers point of view, the smoothness of the gears has less to do with the material, than with the precision of the manufacturing process. Actually the smoothest fishing reels ever made used a steel "pinion". The snail drive found in the ABU Cardinal series as well as the early DAM Quick finessa from the seventies. These where spinning reels, and are not made that way anymore, as the gears was to costly to produce so today we mostly find welded/machined helicane gears in spinning reels.

PERCISION is the key, I know that some of the new SHIMANO CONQUESTS have S.STEEL Pinion Gears and they are smooth as any reel out today.

Percision, The ConQuest is the Best Quality Reel ever !!!!
The C/Q has received the following upgrades over the Calcutta TE, drilled side plates that are sealed by a clear plastic cover to prevent water from coming in reel, forged handle with 4 bearings, forged drag star with a finely clicking system, also the cast control has a finely clicking system also, S.Steel pinion gear, spool breaking system is made from forged metal, and PERCISION, if U get a chance to use one U will see what I'm talking about. I have 2 C/Q that are over 10 years old and still as tight as the day I got them.
