Hey Guys,

Heading up there in July...have been to Sabaskong before, but I'm wondering about Obabikon Lake area. Looks great on the map for a weed bite, but is a little out of the way---which I usually like.

If you don't want to broadcast your successes/failures there to the world, feel free to shoot me a PM.

When we first started going up to Sabaskong Bay we would hire a local guide and he'd take us there occasionally. You're right; it's shallow and has a lot of weeds, but a good amount of islands and rock structure, too. We moved a couple if I remember correctly casting spinnerbaits around reed/weed areas. Getting into the lake could be a challenge if the water's low; you have about 2' of water in some stretches of the tiny channel that goes from Obabikon Bay into Obabikon Lake.

If you're looking for out of the way, my advice (depending on the size of your boat) would be to head west. Lots of water out there and fewer lodges mean fewer boats. Obabikon is worth the adventure at least once, and in all likelihood if you do go in there you'll be one of the only boats in eyesight.

Never been up into Obabikon Lake myself, but have heard that it is a better pike area more than a musky area. I don't know out of personal experiance but just what I hear. If you have the time probally would be fun to experiment for a day just to see what you find. Never know what you might find.

Stayed at red wing one trip and fished Obabikon bay throughout the week. caught two mid 40's and raised three other upper 40's all within shouting distance of Obabibkon Bay Lodge/resort. Was funny to see guys walk to the pier hop in their boats and blast straight out of the bay. never saw anyone fishing "close to home" there. Never made it in to Obabikon lake.

I've fished on Sabaskong for 37 years. There are ski's in OB.
I typically stay at resorts near Morson. When I was a kid and we were renting the 16' alumarines with the 20 hp yami's we would practically go there everyday. Now with the bigger boat the narrows arent worth the trouble. Considering all the other areas I know I usually stick to the main lake areas.
Having said that I have many fond memories of Obabikon Lake including two 44's on back to back casts throwing shad raps for smallmouth.

Good Luck

Joe

Yea I have to say that the narrow channel has been the big thing in stopping me to go. There is so much good water closer that I just fish that. I like exploring but I ususally go west for that.
