Subject: Cass Lake Spearing again

The MMA has started a advocacy campaign to stop the spearing ban from being lifted on Cass Lake, unfortunately this only works for MN residents but we will have a mass email set up for non-residents next week sometime.
It only takes a minute and gets the word to all of the appropriate people, please pass it along to your friends and family.
Thank You
John Underhill

Please Minnesota residents that muskie fish fill out the voter voice. All those that sit on the Environment and Natural Resource Committee will receive an email when you submit this. The hearing is just around the corner and this fishery needs our help. Feel free to copy and paste this to other MN residents.

As far as public hearings there are none. There was a CLIFS (Cass Lake Initiative For Spearing) meeting last Monday in Cass Lake. It isnt really worth our time to go to one of their meetings. We packed the house at one of their meetings last year and Allan Olson from the Cass Lake paper wrote that the majority of the people that were there were for lifting the ban. I bet we outnumbered them 2 to 1. He also started a poll on their website last year and he changed the wording a few times to put his twist on it. Near the last few minutes of the poll it went from 1300 votes for keeping the ban/200 for removing to 1300 for keeping/5000+ for removing the ban. He then gave this "poll" to Senator Olson and she used that in her defense to removing the ban.
The Senate hearing is on Tuesday.
I have the list of those that want the ban removed from last year and it isnt that many. The majority of "businesses" that want the ban removed I have never heard of nor could find in the phone book.

Please everyone sign onto this today! We're going in to the hearing tomorrow and it'd be great to have some momentum on this one.

Im getting responses from some of the legislative members. Their responses seem fairly canned, and even had a few say "This passed last year and it will pass this year"
I think that there is quite a bit of support for this from Minnesotas elected officials. If this passes it will just open a box that will eventually lift spearing bans statewide. Very sad that legislaters are so easily bribed by a few Cass Lake resort owners and MDHAA. Very, very, sad. Unfortunatly for them I wont be spending money in Cass Lake

FYI - If you have any photos of speared or spear scarred muskies send them too - I started doing that, and a couple of the responses were much less "Robotic."

Jerry, if you have any pics of speared muskies we need them. You can send them to me at [email protected] I will make sure John and others get them as well.

Funny - the few that want spearing up here say that opening the spearing ban will increase their business; meanwhile, the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about is the fact that "cleaning up" the town to some degree - reducing crime, etc., would increase business more than anything else. Make sure people can leave their boat at the dock at night w/out getting equipment stolen (west side resorts). Make sure there aren 't five dogs running around the gas pumps when you want to get gas or groceries - people are scared to get out of the vehicle. Make sure local public accesses are safer to leave your truck/trailer there. This is the elephant in the room... The spearing issue is some miniscule, pathetic grab at something, anything to aide financially; and it is being sold as a savior by a few local harpooners...

I am reading in the Strib that the Senate committee OK'd the bill to lift the 20-year old spearing ban on Cass Lake. Does that mean this is a done deal?

It still has to get passed by the legislature and sent to the Governor. It certainly would seem that 1,500,000 anglers would like to catch big northerns and their wishes would take precedence over 15,000. Contact your legislators and tell them you want big northerns and the genetics to produce them does not come from hammer handles.

Hey John, keep up the good work and don't give up. Is this strictly a Minnesota issue or can outsiders help out. Let me know if theres anything I can do and I will try to get the word out to help you. Sorry for the late imput. You know me, always a day late and a dollar short. Good luck in your endeavor. Ken
