Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | esoxmag - 2/24/2011 10:27 AM I just bought a calcutta 400b. Its got a variable brake system with adjustable weights. Do most of you that have this reel turn them off (pushed in)? I havent put line on it yet to experiment. Thanks Your Shimano reel will have 6 brakes, I would start with 2 brakes on, and set your cast controll knob, the knob on the handle side of your reel, just so the spool has no sideways play, NEVER tighted down that knob tight. Start casting and see if U have any over runs of line on the spool. If U did then try 3 brakes, always try to balance out the brakes you have on, say 2 on top and 2 on the bottom of the spool, Shimano says it don't matters but I still will balance them out. Also make sure the line is tight on your spool, and at the end of the day let all your line out in the water and respool the line as tight as U can for the next time you fish. On a very windy day U may have to pull out 1-2 more brakes to stop over runs, or just use your thumb more on the spool. Shimano has 4 different color brakes Gray is the heaviest, then green, pink, smoke is the lightest, U can play around with them on different reels, on my ConQuest 400 that I use for Pounders I run the Gray brakes, on my 300 ConQuest that I use for small baits under 2oz, I will use the clear color brakes on the spool. One more thing I never fill the spool to 100%, I will fill the spool say about 85% fill or about 1/16 of inch from the top, that will help alot with overruns.
