Posts: 95 | I was doing some reading on cattle ranching I came across an interesting statistic made by the author: that for a cow on a particular ranch, he estimated that to grow the animal to slaughter weight that over the course of its lifetime it consumed the equivalent of 35 gallons of oil. I started thinking about muskies and how many gallons of fuel over the course of a season go into each legal muskie caught in my boat. This is probably impossible to do considering the amount of things we utilize in our pursuit of these fish (everything we do involves burning oil) but maybe we can ballpark it based simply on fuel for boat, truck..etc? Anyone have any ideas / thoughts? Chas Martin http://www.muskymastery.com

Posts: 8835 | I put around 4,000 miles on my truck in a season fishing. 12 MPG highway if I am lucky. That's 333 gallons of gas right there, just to get there and back. Granted it's someone else's boat gas, so this is just a wild-ass guess, but I'd say it's about even with what I put in my truck. So 600 -700 gallons a season? Whatever it is, it's a LOT. this is like asking how much do you own in tackle. some questions are left best unanswered.

i love catching muskies, but fishing is about a LOT more than just catching fish. counting fish per gallon ignores all the intangibles like sunsets and wildlife sightings and times with friends...

Posts: 1220 | Some day, I (like everybody else) plan to have a little place on a nice chain of lakes up North where I will stay for the entire season. Until then, and while need to work keeps me here in Milwaukee...a trip up North and back pulling a Ranger 620 with my Yukon and boat gas while there is good (bad??) for about 90 gallons of gas (nearly $300.00) I can usually get at least one legal in the boat fishing any sort of a decent weekend but not always more than one. Therefore, I would be at 90 gallons per fish while traveling to an away lake and nearly $300.00 just for the gas per fish. Add the motel, food and refreshments during the evening and you can see why I am not about to try to save $50.00 to use less than the very best rod, reel and other tackle that money can buy. Now add to that the fact that my wife feels very justified in using her credit card to the max every time I feel these trips to be justified,,,,,and you sort of see that quitting my job and buying the place is not happening any time too soon! Marty Junkman.. Not sure if it was a good idea or not, but I decided that "some day" might never come, so I bought some vacant land on a class A musky lake in Vilas a few years ago. It probably wasn't the best decision in hindsight considering everything that's happened since then. But if I had waited? There's be no way I could even THINK about buying something now. Not telling you what to do of course, but in my case "some day" wouldn't be a possibility if I didn't make it happen a few years ago.
Swami Says![]() |

You came seeking wisdom. Enlightenment. Swami has looked into his crystal ball, and saw the lake country of the future. There will be Kayaks and canoes, and 14 aluminums as well as sunfish sailboats. Trees sprout out of old bass boats. Abandoned marinas dot the shores. Tributary streams will still be crowded. A few old 4x4s rumble on, 4 cylinder and hybrid cars make up what is left of the traffic. The lakes will be quieter, cottage prices will fall. Many more will keep and eat what they catch. Poaching will increase. Too slow to change and adapt to changing fuel availability, and the new market, the once mighty once Wisconsin outboard makers will be a distant memory. A Chinese made lawnmower engine will power the remaining boats. Notice: the preceding is not, and does not express the views of the Tonight show, or the late Johnny Carson. An entirely different Crystal ball was used. ![]() ![]()

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | Depends on the Boat. If we are using the 24.5 ft. four Winns I would say on Lake St. Clair about 20/25 gallons per Day sometimes better sometimes worse. Then factor in gas to the marina and slip rental. Our Starcraft will troll 12 hours on 12 to 14 gallons. If we are casting we use a lot less of course average about 5 gallons a day. Truck uses more gas to get it to the lake then we use on the water. Best economy muskie boat we have a is converted 1448 Sea Ark Jon Boat. casting decks, rod storage bow mount etc. it will troll all day on 3 gallons or cast and troll for up to three days on one tank and one battery charge. I pull it with a Chevy Aveo that 28 mpg towing it at 60 mph. We use that boat a lot on Michigans smaller lakes. This allows us to put more time on the water. There is no way Im going to try to figure it out ha ha ha . Mike
